UHN Hurricane Preparedness Week 12: Don’t Get Complacent

As we move through the middle of hurricane season, the United Houma Nation Office of Emergency Management reminds everyone that now is not the time to become complacent. It only takes one storm to impact our families and communities.

Take time this week to:
• Review your family emergency plan.
• Check and replenish hurricane supplies.
• Replace expired food, medications, and batteries.
• Confirm your evacuation destination.
• Continue monitoring trusted weather and emergency information.

The middle of hurricane season is a good time to reset, restock, and remain ready.

A Houma Nation connection to Gloria Steinem’s legacy.

In 2008, United Houma Nation Principal Chief Brenda Dardar Robichaux received the Gloria Steinem Woman of Vision Award from the Ms. Foundation for Women.

The honor recognized her leadership, especially her work helping Houma families and empowering tribal women in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

With Gloria Steinem’s passing this week, we look back on this moment and an important chapter in United Houma Nation history.

📣PRINCIPAL CHIEF RUNOFF ELECTION: FINAL NOTICE AND REMINDER TO TRIBAL VOTERS📣
Saturday, September 5, 2026 is the run-off election for the Principal Chief election between incumbent Lora Ann Chaisson and challenger Adam Crappel. Below is information that is intended to help voters participate in the election process and clarify any questions or concerns that may arise.

➡️ All notices to eligible voters were mailed out well in advance of the election. If you have not yet received your notice of where your polling location is, please contact the UHN Main Office to get that information and confirm your eligibility to vote. You can call the office between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm today, tomorrow or Friday at (985) 223-3093 or drop in at the temporary location at 187 Corporate Drive, Houma, LA 70360. Please help us by updating your contact information so you can remain in the know.

➡️ If any voter feels that they have not been treated fairly or denied the ability to participate in the election process, please reach out to the Election Board to report. You can reach the Board at [email protected]. The Board's goal is to ensure consistent and fair voter engagement free of any political influence.

➡️ On Election Day, Saturday, September 5, 2026, any voter who has questions or would like to report any believed irregularities in the election process can contact an Election Board Member at the UHN Houma Office by phone at (985) 223-3093.

Experience his artistry at 12:30 PM as Sounds of the River: Water as the Collective explores the cultures and histories connected by the Mississippi.

This position will work closely with the Executive Director and the Corporation’s Board of Directors to develop and implement financial strategies that support the Corporation’s mission and goals. The Finance Director will provide strategic financial leadership and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and Tribal grant requirements.

SAVE THE DATE: OPIOID AWARENESS EVENT, SEPTEMBER 21
The Louisiana Department of Health/Office of Public Health invites the public to its Opioid Awareness Event on Monday, September 21st, 6pm to 8pm, at the Terrebonne Parish Main Library in Houma.

This free event is designed to provide education on the opioid crisis, connect community members with valuable resources, and create a supportive space for survivors and families to share their experiences and recovery journeys. If you missed the July and August events, you won't want to miss this one.

There is now a high (70%) chance of development in the Gulf. This could develop into a short-lived tropical depression/storm overnight as it moves towards SE Texas/SW Louisiana. But regardless of development, we will have the same impacts which is heavy rain, especially closer to the SW parts of our area.
