We did not have a club meeting this week but Rotarians were still busy making an impact in our community.

Rotarians raise the bar! Rotarians were on hand at the annual Arkansas Bar Association meeting last week at the Oaklawn Event Center. A full house was on hand as club member and writer Nancy Hendricks did a presentation on her newest book on Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Conner. Attorney and club member Shelly Joyner then presented a signed copy of the book to Arkansas Chief Justice Karen Baker. The book will be donated to the Univ. of Arkansas Law School Library.

Rotarians at Work – Four members stirred it up at Samaritan Ministries this past Monday evening. Shelly Joyner, Heidi Borton, Jamie Selden, and Troy Dykstra all pitched in to provide a hot meal for the men at Samaritan Ministries. Well done, all!

Sing It Loud, Sing It Proud – Rotarians Jesse & LeeAnn Branch visited the old Hot Springs High School near downtown Hot Springs. Jesse’s niece lives in a loft apartment in the building, and prompted Jesse to belt out a tune in the auditorium where he sang a few years back with the Watson Chapel High School choir in state tournament. Jesse hasn’t lost a beat.

This week’s club meeting spotlighted several of our own outstanding fellow club members. First, Rotarian of the Day Jim Zahnd introduced our speaker, former state legislator Bill Sample who Jim described as the “consummate public servant.” Representing our area in the Arkansas legislature for 18 years, Bill served in both the House of Representatives and in the State Senate through 2023. His behind-the-scenes look at the workings of the State Legislature was fascinating.

Next, Rich Lytle discussed Rotary Fellowships; more info at https://www.rotary.org/en/our-programs/more-fellowships. Rich has participated in Rotary Golf Fellowships since 1990 playing championship courses throughout the US and Canada, has captured several championship trophies, and made enduring friendships with other Rotarians from the US, Canada, and other countries.

In addition, we saw a great video about our Samaritan Ministries service project, produced and directed by Bruce Huddleston.

Guests were Betty Ann Sample, Mary Hobgood and Harrison Newton, DDS.

Wonderful meeting – thanks to everyone!

Our meeting this week was held at our uplifting Change of Gavel celebration at Diamante CC. We held the COG a month early as our incoming President will be gone in June-July. A full house was on hand for a delightful dinner followed by our awards presentations and induction of new officers.

We welcomed new member Mark Heuchert and his family. Mark transferred from the Rotary Club of Sugarland, TX, where he was immediate past president. Following Mark’s recognition, LeeAnn Branch presented Steve & Kathy Wright with a Major Donor Award from the Rotary Foundation for achieving $10,000 or more in Foundation giving.

Several awards were given to exceptional club members. The Clark Deem Award, a lifetime achievement honor, went to Bob Shoemaker. The Ross Johnson Award for exceptional support of our Charity Corporation and fundraising was earned by Kathy Wright, and Jamie Selden was named Rotarian of the Year.

We also installed our incoming Board: President Melanie Pederson, Vice President Mark Heuchert, Secretary Kathy Wright, Treasurer Jamie Selden, and Immediate Past President Steve Wright, who was honored for his outstanding service. Board officers include Pam Galloway/scholarships, Drew Kahle/grants, Heidi Borton & Nancy Hendricks/membership, Shelley Joyner/Rotary Foundation, and Nancy Hendricks/public image.

Thanks to everyone for a great event, a great Rotary year, and a great future!

We had a full house on hand for our meeting this week as Rotarian of the Day Clif Haygood brought us our guest speaker, HSV Fire Chief Jeremy Simmons. Chief Simmons spoke about the challenges of protecting a unique community like ours. He also spoke about the variety of services the FD provides, such as a free check of smoke alarms.

Several other high points were the induction of our newest member, Troy Dykstra, husband of Rotarian Shelley Joyner. Welcome, Troy! And, Foundation Committee Chair Shelly Joyner presented Kathy Wright with a Paul Harris +7 pin. Well done, Kathy!

It was a jam-packed meeting Thursday evening as we welcomed RYLA students and HSV Rotary’s scholarship recipients along with their families. The students spoke engagingly and expressed gratitude for the opportunity our club has provided for them. Joanne Gay (wife of late Rotarian Larry Gay) was honored for her gift to sponsor ten RYLA students in upcoming years. A number of club members came early to sign Mothers Day cards which will be delivered to residents of assisted living. A special moment was inducting Heidi Borton, our newest member. Welcome Heidi!

It’s been a busy week for HSV Rotary. We hosted a CruiseFest 2027 Information Meeting at the Sunset Grill on Wednesday to launch the cruise with about 30 people in attendance. Thank you to those Rotarians who attended and helped greet our guests and helped with the room set-up and clean-up. For more information and registration forms, please go to our website at www.hsvrotary.org. We also have Rotarians volunteering at the ARMoM free dental clinic in Conway this weekend, and will have street clean-up crews out in force in the Village on Saturday helping keep Hot Springs Village beautiful.

Our club’s guest speaker this week was Sallie Culbreth, executive director of Cooperative Christian Ministries and Clinic. Sallie, who is married to our former fellow Rotarian Tim Culbreth, described some of the services provided by CCMC to help the working poor and others in need. She also thanked our club for its generosity in requesting and receiving a district grant to replace the flooring in their education room where they provide a “bridge to hope.”

Club Assembly this week! After filling Easter Cups for residents of assisted living, we heard excellent reports on financials, the Foundation, and service projects. Specifics will be e-mailed to members. Other topics included our upcoming Change of Gavel event which will be held at Diamante on Wednesday May 27. An important discussion involved leadership vacancies for our Rotary year that begins July 1. Please consider contacting Steve or Melanie about chairing a committee or serving as President-Elect because your club needs YOU!

Following the success of our February 2026 cruise to the western Caribbean, the Rotary Club of Hot Springs Village is pleased to announce our plans for a CruiseFest 2027 voyage to the Bahamas. Our newest adventure is scheduled to depart by bus from HSV to Galveston on February 5, 2027. The cruise will include stops in Nassau, Celebration Key, and Relax Away Half-Moon Cay. We will return to the Village on February 14, 2027.

We heard an enjoyable and informative presentation at our Thursday evening meeting by Layne Skinner, assistant director of Mystic Ozark Museum in downtown Hot Springs. Affiliated with the Mid-America Science Museum, Mystic Ozark is located in the restored Ozark Bathhouse on Central Avenue. Its interactive displays focus on the famed geothermal waters of Hot Springs, allowing “children of all ages” to uncover more about Hot Springs National Park, from its legendary healing waters to the colorful history of Bathhouse Row. More info at https://mysticozark.com/.
Congrats to raffle winners Drew and Paul!

We had a great turnout for our club meeting on Thursday evening.

ROD Nancy Hendricks Introduced our speaker, Audrey Findlen, who is founder and president of The Entertainment Foundation. As a professional performer, Audrey found the need to provide high-quality entertainment for local groups such as people in assisted living, senior centers, and veterans’ facilities as well as their Senior Sweethearts program. The group has served 14,000 people since its founding in 2018. Audrey showed a video that included a heart-warming quote: “You made me feel alive today.” Many thanks to Audrey for entertaining us!
