Folks, I need some older (or newer) iPhones and whatever else you have to donate. We check them out, sell them and that's how we grow the Computer & Tech Club Scholarship Fund. We're on to next year but through your donations we were able to give 5 scholarships this year. I can't recall when we have given over 3 so it was a banner year, THANKS TO YOU.

We can pick up or you can drop off. Call David Kirsch at 281-458-2655 or Pat McCarthy at 832-338-5925.

We can't sell them if we can't reset them so can you help by including your contact information - we cringe when we get a perfectly good device that we can't reset - please include it.

For information about the Club, Help sessions, etc. go to cchsv.org or call me - Pat at 832-338-5925. I'm right here in the Village and easily accessible.

Devry Rhodes, Fountain Lake H.S. EAST Lab facilitator, invites us to stop in for technical help with cell phones and Facebook from the students ANYTIME during the day except at lunch time (12:00-1:15). Check in at the office. The lab is right down the hall from there.

Old Phones and Tablets Turned Into Scholarships

First, thanks to all who have donated thus far. We have been able to turn those old devices into cash for our Scholarship Program, thanks to you.

Once again we need more inventory and are asking for your help. If you have an old phone or tablet lying around in a drawer consider donating it. Just call David Kirsch at (281)458-2655 and he will arrange to pick it up.

Special Note – When donating be sure to reset your phone or tablet. If we can’t reset it we will not be able to sell it and will end of recycling it with no benefit to our Scholarship Program. (We always make sure a device does not leave our hands with your data intact. We either reset it to sell or break it so your data is protected.)

SPECIAL SPECIAL NOTE – Right now we have 3 devices that would be good sellers but they have pins on them. If you donated a blue iPad mini, a black Galaxy Note 5 or a black Motorola phone please call Pat McCarthy at (832)338-5925. These are good devices to sell but without being able to reset them they will have to be recycled.

Since we are still unable to meet due to closures and COVID, We did have a ZOOM meeting of the Mobile Device Users last Tuesday. We also gathered as Drone Pilots and kept our social distance and wore Masks, so if there is a will there is a way. And our CCHSV Board met to keep up with the current business needing to be addressed such as name change to Technology Club and to distribute Scholarship Funds to the Students who qualified to receive money. Looking forward to when we can have a general meeting and see all of you again.

Who could use a little good news today?
Putting the genie back in the bottle. One of the issues that has plagued The Village is fast wide coverage internet access, considering that 50 years ago when the village was initially engineered the internet was not even a glimmer in Bill Gates' eye yet, we are doing better than could be expected.
With the Corv 19 virus all around us the internet companies have done something they've resisted for the last 30 years... Unlimited data caps!

The internet providers claimed for years that if everyone had access to unlimited data it would crash the network. Well enter March 2020 when the internet providers have turned off all of the data caps to ensure that people working at home don't run up enormous bills (and hence be made and have bad PR for the providers). It appears to me but no internet providers have crashed or there have not been widespread outages, and the end of the world has not occurred on the internet.
As a matter of fact, http://internettrafficreport.com/ shows that the internet health is… well.. frankly, excellent.

That said, putting the “internet data caps” genie back in the bottle will prove nigh on to impossible. Now that we realize the internet will not crash there is tons of dark fiber laying in the ground, that's the technological term for unused bandwidth, it would be hard for anyone to petition the FTC with a valid discussion that they were charging for data to limit internet traffic and protect the internet bandwidth

While this is not earth-shattering good news it will be a welcome relief for millions of cable cutters and high data users who have been paying a premium for what the FTC openly admits is some of the most expensive internet on the planet.
You would think the place where the internet was invented would have a better monthly price than is currently offered. https://www.statista.com/chart/17247/the-average-cost-of-mobile-data-in-selected-countries/

Wash your hands and use all the data you want
