South Dakota lawmakers have advanced a bill aimed at cracking down on individuals who falsely claim pets as service animals. 🐾⚖️
Supporters of the measure say the legislation is designed to protect people who rely on highly trained service dogs for disabilities, as well as safeguard the integrity of legitimate service animal programs. The proposed bill would establish penalties for knowingly misrepresenting an animal as a service dog.
Advocates argue that fake service animal claims can create safety risks, undermine public trust, and make access more difficult for individuals who truly depend on these trained companions. Service dogs undergo extensive training to perform specific tasks that assist people with disabilities — and they play a critical role in daily independence and mobility.
Lawmakers say the goal is not to limit access, but to ensure that legitimate service animal teams are respected and protected under the law.
