John Apgar, a noted Catskill fly tier, will be presenting to EJTU during our June meeting. John is the president of the Catskill Fly Tying Guild and has been an active member since its inception. John is a master at prepping and preparing fly tying materials, even raising birds, as well as being a great tier.

He also teaches the bamboo rod building class at the Catskill Museum. John will be demonstrating the meticulous art of bamboo rod building including bamboo comb splitting and planing. John will be open to any and all questions for our group. Don’t miss this meeting. It’s going to be informative on many levels.

This year’s Catskill Picnic started cold, windy and overcast. By the time the pig was ready the sun had come out with more than 50 members and guests. We had new members, long-term members, Catskill royalty in the form of fly-fishing authors, fly tiers, bamboo rod makers and representatives from other TU chapters. The fishing was slow all week, but as that picnic came to an end that changed. The hatches started at time as many as 6 different bugs were on the water at the same time. Clouds of bugs started flying upriver and the frustration of trying to figure out what the fish were keyed on started, It turned out to be a great day. Thank you to the volunteers who helped and did so much.

On Saturday, May 9, seven members of East Jersey Trout Unlimited met in the front of the Pequest Trout Hatchery to fish throughout the morning. After having bagels and coffee, they set out to find their quarry, freshly stocked rainbow trout. Several fish were caught drifting various nymphs and attractor patterns. One member, Pat, hooked into a trophy but it dove under a submerged log and broke off before it could be landed by Pat. The members then moved upstream where they continued to fish for about an hour. Several more trout were landed and they all were able to make it to Hot Dog Johnny's before the rain moved in. After lunch, everyone left not as just members, but as friends.

Captain Zach Flake will be presenting on the in-shore fisheries of NJ. These areas include the NY Metro backwater estuaries and the flats of Barnegat Bay. A lifelong angler and third-generation outdoorsman, Captain Zach brings deep local knowledge and hands-on experience to every charter. His specialty lies in shallow-water sight fishing and targeting striped bass and other local species on fly and light tackle.

Off the water, Zach is a dedicated conservationist and craftsman, often tying his own flies from ethically sourced materials and supporting sustainable fishing practices. He is familiar to several EJTU members who have enjoyed good days on the water on one of his charters.
