One of the recipe books in The Hermitage archives came with a mystery: no clear indication of who it belonged to.🕵️‍♀️

The cookbook committee began looking for clues.

✒️The handwriting.
📖The recipes selected.
🍪Even the way ingredients were listed.

Their best guess led to one of the more mysterious people in The Hermitage story: Kathryn “Katie” Zahner.

Katie had worked as a live-in servant for members of the Rosencrantz family before moving into The Hermitage with Mary Elizabeth in 1943. The two would live in the house for the rest of their lives.

Even more intriguing? This is one of the only known photographs of Katie.

Her possible recipe book is one of the archival sources explored while creating The Hermitage Baking Book.

Six women. A century of recipes. One remarkable house.

The recipes preserved at The Hermitage tell more than the story of what people ate. They offer a glimpse into the women who lived, cooked, baked and shared recipes here across generations.

The Hermitage Baking Book: One House, a Century of Recipes draws from recipe collections connected to six Hermitage residents, spanning from the mid-1800s through the mid-1900s:

Cornelia “Killie” Dayton Rosencrantz
Mary Caroline “Kitty” Warner Rosencrantz
Mary Elizabeth “Aunt Bess” Rosencrantz
Bessie Grove Tyler Rosencrantz
Mary Elizabeth “Elizabeth” Rosencrantz II
Kathryn “Katie” Zahner

Now, recipes preserved in their handwritten books, diaries and cards are being brought back to the kitchen.

It took more than a century to collect these recipes. And more than 200 volunteers to help bring them back to life.

Measurements change. Ingredients change. Ovens change. Sometimes instructions simply aren't there.

So before the recipes in The Hermitage Baking Book could reach your kitchen, they had to be baked, interpreted, compared and tested.

💞A very special thank you to the more than 200 volunteers signed up to help.

The result is a collection rooted in The Hermitage archives and made to be baked again. Bring Hermitage history into your kitchen.
