Check out the latest edition of Littoral News to find out all about upcoming events with the Littoral Society for the month of November. Whether you're in New York, North Jersey, or South Jersey we've got something for you!

Learn to surf fish for striped bass up in Sandy Hook on Saturday, November 7th. All skill levels are welcome. This is a fun intro learning course with outgoing instructors. Rods, reels, and tackle will be provided. Anglers 16+ are welcome.

Join us on a hike to look for winter waterfowl up at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in NY. Learn about their behavior, biology, habitat, and how to identify them in the wild. Saturday, November 14th.

Finally, down in Vineland, NJ volunteer with us on Monday, November 23rd to help add new native plants at our bioswale green stormwater project at Giampietro Park. This project redirects stormwater that would otherwise make its way to the Maurice River and from there down to the Delaware Bay.

Dorn Island, situated in the Navesink River near Barley Point in Rumson, NJ is a 4-acre river island that will be the location of the Society’s next research pilot project.

In our field, practitioners regularly research new restoration methods and test different materials and equipment as they are developed and released. To improve the overall success of a project and the probability of achieving desired outcomes, it’s beneficial for practitioners to implement a pilot project first, a scaled-down version of the overall project. A pilot project serves as a foundation helping to evaluate the performance of chosen techniques, methods, equipment, and material on a small-scale before implementing the large-scale effort. Dorn Island will serve this purpose, to test new techniques, materials, and equipment helping the Society’s restoration team make informed decisions with regards to larger projects.

For this pilot project, five materials will be placed along the shoreline and monitored for integrity and performance, recruitment, and biodiversity. Materials being tested include traditional mesh shell bags, biopolymer BESE bags, jute fiber prisms, rubble mounds, and tabby concrete. Some of these materials have been implemented and tested at select Delaware Bay projects, however, have not been tested in the calmer waters of the Navesink. Monitoring how these materials perform over time will help the team better plan for future living shoreline projects in and around Monmouth County. Join the American Littoral Society's Fish Tagging Manager to learn the art of fishing for Striped Bass on the surf during the 2026 fall striped bass migration. As part of the program, we will cover the basics of casting, knot tying, lure/bait selection, and “reading a beach". Part of the course is in the "classroom" and the majority is out on the beach fishing and practicing those skills.

All skill levels are welcome; novice fishermen are encouraged. This is a fun intro learning course with outgoing instructors. Rods, reels, and tackle will be provided. Anglers 16+ are welcome. Participants must have a copy of their NJ Saltwater Registry. We will be able to assist those first-time anglers get their registry the day of the event.

A big thank you to everyone who volunteered to help us fill out our new rain garden at the Deptford Free Public Library with native plants! This rain garden will help prevent stormwater runoff to the nearby Woodbury Creek, which flows into the Delaware River and from there down to the Delaware Bay. And because of these native plants, it will also be a source of food for native pollinators.
