My Journey with Rotary Began Long Before I Officially Became a Rotarian

As a student at Herndon High School, I was involved in Interact, where I discovered the importance of giving back to my community. Through initiatives such as Excel tutoring and mentoring students at Herndon Middle School, I learned that service isn’t always about grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s simply about showing up, sharing your knowledge, and making a difference in someone’s day.At the time, I didn’t fully realize how much those experiences would shape the person I would become.

Years later, my journey came full circle when I joined the Rotary Club of Herndon-Reston in 2026. Returning to the Rotary family, this time as an adult and professional, felt incredibly meaningful. The same values that inspired me as a teenager continue to guide me today: compassion, community, leadership, and service above self.

My commitment to service also extends to participating in the She Believes In Me event, where I worked with young children and help create meaningful experiences that encourage, support, and inspire them. Being involved in opportunities like these reminds me that investing in children and nurturing their potential can make a lasting difference in their lives.

One of the most meaningful milestones of this journey was receiving the Paul Harris Fellow recognition in May 2026. It was a moment of gratitude and reflection, reminding me how something that began in high school had grown into a lifelong commitment to service. My story is a testament to the lasting impact of youth service programs like Interact. They don’t just create opportunities for students to volunteer; they help cultivate the next generation of community leaders.

And for me, this is only the beginning.

ONE MISSION. ONE COMMUNITY. ONE GOAL: A WORLD WITHOUT POLIO.

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, the Rotary Club of Herndon-Reston brought together more than 40 Rotarians, Interact Club students from Herndon High School and South Lakes High School, and their families and friends for our 2026 Walk to End Polio!

For decades, Rotary has led the global fight to eradicate polio, working alongside international partners to vaccinate children, support health workers, and protect vulnerable communities. Because of this extraordinary worldwide effort, polio cases have been reduced by more than 99% since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Our participation sends a powerful message: we stand with the children and families who depend on continued vaccination, education, funding, and worldwide cooperation. Every contribution, every awareness campaign, and every step forward helps bring us closer to a historic achievement—the eradication of polio forever.

The participation of our Herndon High School and South Lakes High School Interact students is especially meaningful. By walking alongside Rotarians, they demonstrate that service has no age limit and that the next generation is ready to carry forward Rotary's mission of creating a healthier, safer world for all.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Tony Fulkerson, Club Polio Chair, for organizing this meaningful event, and to Dennis and Mary Drum for capturing these wonderful moments through their photography. Thank you to every Rotarian, student, family member, and friend who joined us and helped make this day a success.

Together, we are more than a club. We are part of a worldwide movement determined to finish what we started.

When Community Leaders Listen, Communities Grow
The Rotary Club of Herndon-Reston was honored to welcome Supervisor Walter Alcorn Hunter Woods, and Dranesville District - Supervisor Jimmy Bierman for an engaging question-and-answer session focused on issues and concerns affecting Fairfax County.

What made this conversation especially meaningful was the opportunity for open dialogue. Community leaders who take the time to listen directly to residents and community organizations demonstrate that effective leadership is not simply about making decisions — it is about hearing the people those decisions affect.

Club President Tim Dowling introduced our speakers to members and guests at our breakfast meeting at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern where great food, fellowship, and warm hospitality are always served.

Rotary believes in the power of people coming together to understand, serve, and create positive change. This was a wonderful example of in our community! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to visit.

Clean drinking water changes everything—and 25 Rotary clubs in Rotary District 7610 helped make it possible. Rotary Club of Herndon-Reston is proud to be one of 25 Rotary clubs in District 7610 participating in the SWA -7610 Strategic Water Alliance. Together, these amazing Rotary clubs combine their resources, passion, and commitment to address one of the world's most basic needs: access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.

On October 3, 2026, Rotarians from throughout Rotary District 7610 gathered at Jones Point Park in Alexandria for the annual SWA Walk for Water. It was inspiring to walk alongside Rotarians from so many clubs, including District Governor Peter Anderson, DGE Cheri Maea, AG Ambreen Rizvi, and others united by a common purpose. The event was hosted by the The Rotary Club of Alexandria, Virginia.

The SWA Walk for Water symbolizes the long distances millions of people around the world walk each day to obtain water—often water that is unsafe. Through SWA, District 7610 Rotary clubs help fund sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene projects that improve health, reduce disease, support education, strengthen communities, and create greater opportunities for families.
