🪶Happy World Bird Migratory Day! 🦅

10/06/2026

Did you know Runnymede, England is the sister city for Herndon, Va? There is a plaque in the park, with today’s date in 1991, referencing this.

Over half a million birds passed through DC last night, and many more nights like this are ahead! Sadly, after nights like these our team typically sees window strike casualties skyrocket.

From this week through about October 15 our region will be in "peak migration." During this time, high volumes of migratory birds will be on the move primarily at night.

These birds face perilous journeys, and many will not reach their destinations due to threats such as:
🌃 Window and building collisions
💡 Light pollution (>80% of birds migrate at night, and light is a disorienting lure towards hazardous landscapes)
🐱 Domestic animal interactions
🌱 Habitat loss and food scarcity

‼️Did you know that last fall City Wildlife hosted a free webinar with DC Bird Alliance all about protecting birds on their migration, and where to see migrating birds in DC?
