CompassionWorks International

CompassionWorks International Act for All Animals. And, like you, we envision a day when all animals are free to live their lives free from unnecessary harm and suffering. Who are we?

At CompassionWorks International, we believe....

...in kindness, respect, unity, dialogue, community, commitment, strategic action, one world for all beings, neighbors talking to neighbors, and friends sharing with friends. But change for animals will not happen unassisted. The animals enslaved by the entertainment industry, used for medical testing, and slaughtered for their fur, skins, and fle

sh need our collective voice. They are counting on us to speak loudly, clearly, and effectively on their behalf--to let the world know that they are sentient beings with families, feelings, and a right to freedom. At CWI, we provide the assistance needed to bring hope to animals. We believe that by implementing professional, strategic actions within our communities, every one of us can be a beacon of light that spreads awareness about the pain and suffering that occurs inside the tanks, under the big tops, within the racetracks, and behind the shuttered doors of factory farms and medical testing facilities. We are you. And our goal is to help you do your good work better. If you are ready to be a voice for animals, join us!

Patty is the last remaining elephant at the Bronx Zoo. She was captured from the wild 56 years ago and she has been kept in solitary confinement since 2018, when her companion, Maxine, died.

Happy had been kept isolated from Patty and Maxine since 2002. Twenty-four elephants have died at the Bronx Zoo.

In research reported about 20 years ago, Happy appeared to recognize herself in a mirror. She was later the subject of a failed lawsuit claiming elephants should have certain fundamental human rights

Incredibly sad news: Happy the elephant, at only 55 years old, has been euthanized by Bronx Zoo.

Note that Happy was an Asian elephant who lived alone. There were many initiatives to send her to sanctuary, including CWI's campaign to end the keeping of lone elephants in zoos: https://www.cwint.org/advocate/azaelephants . Patty, the other elderly elephant living alone at Bronx Zoo, remains -- we will keep fighting for her!

Happy, a Bronx Zoo elephant who gave researchers new insight into the animal's behavior and became the crux of a closely watched animal rights case, has been euthanized at age 55.

Loomis Bros Circus is scheduled to bring Okha to upcoming shows in Pennsylvania. If venues refuse to host the circus while Okha is part of the act, they can help end one of the last remaining outlets for her exploitation.

Tell these venues: do not allow Loomis Bros. to bring Okha onto your property. Okha deserves retirement in her golden years — not another season of circus abuse.

Big news! This week, the Illinois State Senate passed HB 4255, which would end the use of big cats, bears, and primates in traveling shows (circuses, county fairs, etc).

This legislation is now awaiting signature from Governor JB Pritzker.

In 2017, Illinois became the first state in the country to ban the use of elephants in circuses! Way to go, Illinois!
