MEDAL OF HONOR MONDAY

Today we honor Army Lt. Col. Robert G. Cole, a paratrooper of the 101st Airborne Division whose courage on D-Day became one of the most legendary actions of World War II.

On June 11, 1944, near Carentan, France, Cole and his battalion were pinned down by intense German fire. With his men unable to advance, he made a daring decision: he stood up, blew his whistle, and led a bayonet charge straight into enemy positions. His fearless assault broke the stalemate, inspired his paratroopers, and secured a critical foothold for the Allied advance inland from Normandy.

For his extraordinary heroism, Lt. Col. Cole was awarded the Medal of Honor. He was later killed in action in September 1944, while continuing to lead from the front. Today, we remember his courage, his leadership, and his sacrifice

Today we honor the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps, founded on June 17, 1898, when President William McKinley signed the act creating one of the most heroic communities in American military history.

Before the Corps existed, medical care at sea was handled by untrained “loblolly boys.” Since then, generations of highly trained Corpsmen have stood beside Sailors and Marines in every conflict for more than 125 years. They are the ones Marines call “Doc”—a name earned through courage, compassion, and the willingness to run toward danger.

The Navy Hospital Corps is the only all-enlisted corps in the U.S. Navy and the most decorated rating in its history, earning:

- 23 Medals of Honor
- 179 Navy Crosses
- 959 Silver Stars

These numbers reflect lives saved, battles endured, and the unbreakable bond between Corpsmen and the Marines they serve. Today, we honor every "Doc"—past and present—for their sacrifice, skill, and heart.

Today we honor Army Pvt. Joe Gandara, whose courage during the liberation of France stands as a timeless example of valor and sacrifice.

On June 9, 1944, near Amfreville, France, Pvt. Gandara’s unit was pinned down by intense enemy fire. Without hesitation, he rose from cover, charged alone across open ground, and destroyed three enemy machine-gun nests before giving his life to protect his fellow soldiers.

A proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division, Pvt. Gandara was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2014, ensuring his heroism will forever be remembered.

We remember. We honor. We carry his legacy forward.

On this day, we proudly stand alongside our fellow Americans in celebrating the Army's rich heritage, which dates back to June 14, 1775, when the Continental Army was formed to protect the young nation and fight for liberty.

For 251 years, Soldiers have remained vigilant on far-off foreign shores, in harsh environments, and here at home, unwaveringly upholding the Army's hallowed motto: 'This We'll Defend.'

To every Soldier, past and present, and to the families who stand by them, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your valor, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to defending the United States of America.
