A fleet of 5 power boats equipped with safety gear to provide safety support and a platform for coaches. Our Location

The adjacent community center provides bath and meeting facilities. Our Facilities

The City of Hampton provide incredible support by providing use of the Community Pier adjacent to the Fort Monroe Community Center. The Fort Monroe Authority provides support through the use of our Sailing Center, which serves as our classroom and maintenance facility.

We are thrilled to welcome Dreugh Phillips as Youth Sailing Virginia's new Sailing Director.

Dreugh brings a lifelong connection to the waters of Hampton Roads. He discovered competitive sailing at Norfolk Collegiate, qualifying for the Baker High School National Championship, and went on to captain the Old Dominion University team while earning his degree in Aerospace Engineering. As a coach at Christopher Newport University, he led the Captains to two of their three all-time Women's National Championship appearances and was named the 2026 MAISA Coach of the Year.

As Sailing Director, Dreugh will lead day-to-day operations at YSV: ensuring the safety of sailors, staff, and volunteers; delivering and expanding our programs; building and training our operations team; and keeping our boats and facilities maintained and ready for every sailor on the water.

His philosophy begins with safety and extends far beyond it. Dreugh believes sailing is one of the best classrooms a young person can experience, building self-reliance, problem-solving, and perseverance every time sailors step on the water.

His connection to YSV is personal, too. He raced in some of the program's earliest regattas and trained out of this same facility during his coaching career. When he's not leading the program, he races his Melges 15 on the national circuit.

We are excited for this next chapter under his leadership!

Calling all Crab Cruisers! Weeks 6 and 7 are full!

So, we've added another class in Week 5 opening up new spots for sailors ages 8 to 11 who have a little sailing experience, whether that's a week of Sea Squirts with us or time in another program.

This is where it gets exciting: more time on the water, real skill-building, and the goal of sailing solo by the end of the week. The course also weaves in a STEM curriculum, introducing science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on sailing.

Sailing should be fun, not an all-day endurance test in the sun. β›΅

That's why Youth Sailing Virginia built our Learn to Sail program the way young kids actually need it. For ages 8 to 11, we run half-day sessions, morning or afternoon, so you can pick the time that works for your family. A focused half day is just the right amount of wind, water, and sun for a little one to stay happy and excited to come back, instead of worn out and overheated by a full day on the boat.

And here is what really sets us apart: your child does not need to be a strong swimmer to join. Every sailor wears a properly fitted life jacket the entire time, our instructors keep a close eye on the whole fleet, and safety comes first on and off the dock. We meet kids exactly where they are, even if they have never set foot on a boat.

This is the gentle first step into sailing. Confidence, independence, new friends, and time spent unplugged and outdoors.

πŸ† Alan Bomar wins the Eddie Williams Sportsmanship Award!!

Youth Sailing Virginia Board Member Alan Bomar was honored this past Sunday, May 31, at Hampton Yacht Club’s Southern Bay Race Week with the Eddie Williams Sportsmanship Award.

Alan was recognized for his outstanding efforts to grow participation in One-Design racingβ€”specifically by preparing Eddie Williams’ former J/24 and rallying a crew to race β€œWilli” during the event.

The J/24 was generously donated in 2021 by the Williams family to Youth Sailing Virginia to help expand One-Design racing opportunities across Hampton Roadsβ€”and Alan’s work continues to bring that mission to life on the water.

πŸ‘ Big congrats to Alan on a well-deserved honor and thank you for keeping the spirit of sailing strong in our community. πŸ’™

β›΅ Youth Sailing Virginia hosted a Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Course last weekend!

Ten sailors from across Hampton Roads came together to sharpen their skills and take the next step toward becoming certified sailing instructors.

➑️ Led through the US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructor Course, participants learned how to teach on and off the water with a focus on safety, creativity, and confidence-building instruction. Topics included lesson planning, risk management, safety practices, teaching techniques, and the psychology behind effective coaching.

We’re proud to help develop the next generation of sailing instructors who will lead with knowledge, care, and confidence on the water. 🌊
