Weekly Message from Pastor Rachel:

Sunday was a liturgical observance I had never celebrated before: Children’s Sabbath. I did some research and included a brief summary on the back of the bulletin cover. First observed in 1992, Children’s Sabbath has grown to include more than 200 denominations. While congregations celebrate it in different ways, its central message is simple: we are called to care for children, even, and especially, those who are not our own.

At baptism, we, the church, promise to support children and their families, both by teaching them about our faith and by offering tangible care. And that promise doesn’t end at confirmation. The church is called to continually care for the vulnerable among us and to provide a place of comfort and safety. Our Book of Order, part of the Presbyterian Constitution, names one of the church’s six great ends as providing “shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship to the children of God.”

What would it look like, and what would it take, for us—the Presbyterian Church at Hammonton—to make this vision a model for our ministry? What if we understood this calling as an invitation to care for all God’s children, from their first breath to their last?

Coming up, we’ll celebrate Reformation Sunday and remind ourselves that God is not done shaking things up, not in the church, and not in us. God is still at work making us new, inviting us to stretch our imaginations and envision new ways of being the church together.

May we have the courage to imagine and the love to make that vision real.

Blessings,
Rachel
