Today is the last day to sign up for our CSA! As a sneak peek of what's in store, meet one of our incredible producers: Adam of Pax Farms

Adam is the cultivator and owner of Pax Farms, a local mushroom farm right here in the Gunnison Valley. He grows gourmet mushrooms including Blue Oysters, Lion's Mane, and Pioppini, with even more varieties on the way. His mushrooms are grown using Colorado-sourced materials whenever possible, including aspen pellets, whole oats, and millet grown right here in our state.

What we love most about Pax Farms is their commitment to sustainability. After harvest, spent mushroom blocks are returned to local farms for compost, helping close the loop and return nutrients back to the earth.

Pax Farms is dedicated to growing food naturally and organically, using non-GMO, soy-free inputs while supporting fellow Colorado farmers every step of the way. You may have already seen their mushrooms featured at local restaurants or Clark's Market in Crested Butte, and this summer you can add them to your Mountain Roots CSA!

"We're super stoked to be working with Mountain Roots. Our missions really align, especially around providing high-quality food for the valley." says Adam.

Visit our website mountainrootsfoodproject.org to sign up today! Don’t miss the opportunity to get 16-weeks of fresh, local food.

This is the last week to sign up for our 16-week summer CSA! As a sneak peek to see what is going to be included, we wanted to highlight one of our favorite producers: Savor the Wild AK Salmon

Meet the fishermen of Savor the Wild: Hayden, Jaymi, and their son Henry of Savor the Wild Salmon.

Most of the year, they call Fairplay, Colorado home, but every summer they head to Bristol Bay, Alaska to captain the F/V Aurora Reign during one of the world’s largest wild sockeye salmon runs.

2026 marks their ninth season as captains, with more than 33 years of combined experience in Alaska commercial fisheries. Hayden is a second-generation Alaska fishermen, while Jaymi is a first-generation fisherman. Together, they are proud to continue the tradition of harvesting wild Alaska salmon and sharing it with communities here in Colorado while raising the next generation alongside them.

The Bristol Bay salmon run is one of the last great natural wonders, and every fish they bring home is handled with incredible care from the moment it leaves the water. Their wild sockeye salmon is vacuum sealed and flash frozen within 24 hours to lock in that fresh, right off the boat flavor.

Sockeye salmon is known for its bright red color, rich flavor, firm texture, and high Omega-3 content. It is versatile, nutritious, and even sushi-grade thanks to their careful handling practices.

Meet Marisela Ballesteros, our Healthy Futures AmeriCorps Program Manager.

“We believe the future of local food systems depends on the next generation of growers, educators, and agricultural leaders. As traditional funding sources continue to shrink, sustaining these opportunities becomes more challenging. Community support helps Mountain Roots continue investing in young leaders and the long-term resilience of the Gunnison Valley.”

This week, Mountain Roots is welcoming new AmeriCorps members and a farming intern to help grow food, support youth programs, care for our farms and gardens and strengthen our local food system throughout the season ahead.
At the same time, funding for these positions has been significantly reduced. Support we have traditionally relied on is no longer guaranteed, and community support is more important than ever.

At Mountain Roots, we believe regenerative agriculture is about more than farming. It is about restoring soil health, protecting water, supporting biodiversity and ensuring healthy food can continue to be grown here for generations to come.

Through our regenerative agriculture training programs, Mountain Roots is helping pass this knowledge on to the next generation through meaningful hands-on learning and employment opportunities for young farmers and food system leaders.

Your support helps make this work possible.

Your gift today helps sustain agricultural training, mentorship and opportunities for young leaders in our community while helping build a healthier and more resilient future for the Gunnison Valley. Visit mountainrootsfoodproject.org/donate to give today.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Dig-In Day at Glacier Farm this past Sunday! Even with the rain, snow, and hail, we accomplished so much to get the farm ready for a full season of growing local food. Thank you to Crested Butte Land Trust for the great partnership and for being out there with us.

If you want to get more involved with our growing spaces, visit mountainrootsfoodproject.org/volunteer to see which spaces need volunteers at which times.

Last week, our Mountain Roots AmeriCorps team hosted a Service Day at the Gunnison Lake School. Our service members guided five preschool classes as they learned how to plant, seed and water their garden beds. Along with exploring new flavors at our tasting table full of vegetables they will grow this season! How fun it was to play in the garden with little hands and BIG energy.

Meet the President of our Board, Olivia Lueckemeyer. “Mountain Roots camps have given my kids experiences they simply wouldn’t get anywhere else. They come home muddy, curious, confident, and excited to tell us what they harvested that day or what they saw on an outdoor adventure. As a parent, it means a lot knowing they’re building a real connection to food, the outdoors, and this community.”

At Mountain Roots, we believe helping children understand where food comes from changes the way they see themselves, their health, and their connection to the land around them.

This year, Mountain Roots is making approximately $100,000 in investments that support youth education, transportation, farm operations, and community growing spaces. These improvements help create safe, hands-on learning experiences for local students while strengthening the systems that keep fresh food moving throughout our valley.

Your support today helps us invest in the vehicles, gardens and learning spaces that will carry this work forward throughout the summer and beyond.

Come join us at Majestic Theatre this Saturday for a FREE screening of Food Inc 2. The movie starts at 6:30, and after the film, stay for a discussion with a panel of local experts as we dive into the realities of our local food system and what a healthier, more resilient future could look like right here in the Gunnison Valley.

Make it a dinner and a movie night! Eat at either Secret Stash Pizza or The Gourmet Noodle before the show, let them know you're there for Mountain Roots, and a portion of your check will be donated to Mountain Roots, helping support local food access and community programs.

The Hearth & High Country event last night at Stellar Jay and Populus Denver was fantastic. We met some incredible chefs and diners, sampled some delicious Colorado dishes, and a portion of the proceeds are coming back to support Mountain Roots!

Huge Thank You to Chef Anthony Nelson of Crested Buttes’ two twelve cb and Chef Blaise Colamarino of Stellar Jay for creating such a special menu. We couldn’t be more appreciative of everyone involved and are excited to continue our mission in the Gunnison Valley with some newfound support.
