Drive any old farm road and you can still read them — a straight rank of cedars or cottonwoods standing off the northwest corner of every farmstead, planted by somebody's grandfather with a spade and an opinion about the wind.

They knew what they were doing. A windbreak takes the winter wind broadside and spills it up and over, leaving a pocket of calm in its lee — house, barn, and stock all sheltered behind it. Done right, it ran taller trees down the middle and shrubs along the feet, so the wind couldn't slip underneath.

In the Dust Bowl years the whole country took up the old farmyard trick — the Prairie States Forestry Project put some 220 million trees into eighteen thousand miles of windbreaks between 1935 and 1942, from the Dakotas clear down to Texas.

Those rows are thinning now, some near a century old. But stand behind one on a hard January day and you'll understand every shovelful.
