The Lemuel Rhodes Cancer Foundation is a community effort to support our neighbors who are battling cancer. Lemuel Rhodes, a long time Bond County resident, lost his brother to cancer and his own life to the disease in 2002. In his will, Lem provided from proceeds from part of his trust to be used to help Bond County residents, suffering from cancer, and to offer resources as they sought treatment. Through a confidential application process, individuals may apply for assistance to help with items, medical bills, not covered by insurance, assistance with lodging and travel and treatment, specially fitted garments, and other necessary items. In 2014, the Lemuel Rhodes Cancer Foundation (LRCF) fundraising committee was founded by a group of Bond County citizens. Monies from the Rhodes trust, supplemented by local fundraising, will help to continue to provide assistance to Bond County cancer patients or those who doctor in Bond County. Each year, 10% of funds raised is donated back to a cancer research organization in hopes that someday, there will be a cure for cancer!

What a wonderful two weeks of LRCF events!! Starting with the WGEL Great Celebrity Pie Auction. Over $21,000 raised by our ever faithful pie bakers and local celebrities!!

And then there was Saturday night at the Bond County Courthouse. A Night to Honor and Remember our families and neighbors who have cancer. The Luminary Ceremony tugged on all of our heartstrings.

Last, but not least, Our Survivors/Caregivers dinner. The food was over the top. Fried chicken, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and carrots, salad, rolls, drinks and desserts. SO GOOD🌟 Catered by Vicki and Robert Ellsworth. They are the best! We had so many great comments about the meal!

Tomorrow is opening day of the great WGEL Celebrity Pie Auction! I will have the Lemuel Rhodes pie on the radio at 9am. Bidding at 664-3300. The Caramel Apple pie has been baked by a great hometown baker, Suzanne Hoffmeier. We Thank You Suzanne!! All proceeds from the 3 day auction benefit cancer patients from Bond County thru the Lemuel Rhodes Cancer Foundation. Please tune in tomorrow morning. I will have a special guest during my time slot??
