Okaw Valley ARC Hosts First POTA Activation & Family Picnic at Hazlet State Park:

The Okaw Valley Amateur Radio Club successfully held its first Parks On The Air (POTA) activation and family picnic at the Olympic Pavilion in Hazlet State Park, located along the scenic shores of Carlyle Lake.

Members and families gathered for a day of radio operations, fellowship, and outdoor fun. Operators activated the park under the POTA program, demonstrating portable HF operation, sharing techniques, and helping newer hams experience on‑air contacts in a relaxed, supportive environment.

The Olympic Pavilion provided an ideal operating location with ample space for antennas, equipment, and picnic activities. Families enjoyed food and conversation while operators logged contacts and showcased the versatility of amateur radio in the field.

The event marked an exciting milestone for the club, blending community, education, and radio into a memorable day at one of Illinois’ most beautiful state parks.

We had 5 stations activated, including a Morse Code Station (CW) under the control of Andy KD9HA (38 contacts) Voice Station under the Control of Ken KK9N (13 Contacts) and the FT8 Station under the control of David AD9HO (41 Contacts) and 1 Satellite Station (1 Contact via ISS Repeater) under the control of David AD9HO.
