Glen Rock Shade Tree Advisory Committee In addition, to educate and promote the benefits and value of the urban forest.

The Shade Tree Committee was established as a community effort to advise the Borough Council and the Director of Public Works as to future plans relating to the planting, pruning, removal and care of those trees and shrubs within the Borough that are located upon public rights-of-way, public parks, school grounds and other public places and to assist in the solution of problems relating to the same. The Committee also works to manage the Glen Rock Tree Trust, which has a mission to plant and maintain trees in the Borough as well as raise public awareness of the importance of urban forestry conservation and stewardship. The mission of the Committee is to create and maintain optimum tree cover and species diversity while keeping up a pruning and removal program that will keep Glen Rock's streets and parks safe.

The black tupelo has quite the story to tell. Its ancestors survived the Ice Age. Some individual trees have lived for more than 650 years. As it ages, its bark develops the look of alligator hide. Its blooms aren't particularly showy, but bees love them in the late spring when other food sources become scarce. And depending on where you live, you may know it by a different name.

But the biggest surprise might be that it’s a fall stunner, putting on a spectacular show, outshining the trees typically thought of during the season. Its leaves can turn shades of yellow, orange, bright red, and purple, sometimes on the same branch.

Leaf season across much of the East is the easiest time to learn the trees. The color gives them away, and the leaves are lying right there.

- Oak: Supports diverse caterpillars and feeds wildlife with its acorns.
- Red Maple: Early spring flowers for bees.
- Black Cherry: Nourishes birds and caterpillars like the tiger swallowtail.
- Tulip Tree: Unique tulip-shaped leaves, perfect for tiger swallowtail caterpillars.
- Hickory: Provides nuts for squirrels and food for regal moth caterpillars.
- Sassafras: Varied leaf shapes and food for spicebush swallowtails.
