Melissa Gilmore — “My mother had Alzheimer’s and it truly was life changing not only for her, but for our whole family. She was someone you would want as a friend. She was there to lend a hand when needed, loved to have a conversation over a cup of coffee and was always up for an adventure! She had a quick wit and loved to learn new things. She was an avid baker and loved to do needlepoint and paint. These interests faded when she developed Alzheimer’s disease.”

Melissa will walk in honor of her mother at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Richmond, Virginia, locally sponsored by Genworth & CareScout, on Saturday, November 7 at City Stadium. The Promise Garden Ceremony starts at 10:15 a.m. and the Walk at 10:45 a.m. Join her to . Visit http://act.alz.org/rva to register or donate.

Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) is a progressive form of dementia that leads to a decline in thinking, reasoning and independent function.

Since Lewy bodies usually coexist with Alzheimer's brain changes, it may sometimes be hard to distinguish DLB from Alzheimer's disease, especially in the early stages.

“Boo Alzheimer’s! Spooky yard. Serious cause.” 👻 That’s the motto behind Abbie Giompoletti’s front yard, where a Halloween tradition is making real impact for families facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.

Each October, Abbie transforms her yard with creative skeleton scenes, switching them up all month long. It’s become a neighborhood staple.

This year, Abbie saw a chance to turn the display into something bigger. Her dad is living with Alzheimer’s, and her mom is his full-time caregiver. Abbie said that underneath “all the ghosts, goblins, pumpkins, and questionable decorating decisions, there’s a serious cause close to our hearts.”

So, she made her yard a Do What You Love to End ALZ fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association, adding signs with a QR code so visitors can give if the spooky scenes put a little spirit in their step.

Since the end of September, Abbie and her family have raised $42K (and counting), and they can’t wait to see the final total on Oct. 31!

Ready to follow Abbie’s lead? Your holiday lights, decorations or themed yard could do more than light up the street. Turn what you love into a fundraiser to end Alzheimer’s. Get started at alz.org/dowhatyoulove.

Thank you to Abbie, her family and their community for turning a beloved tradition into real progress toward a world without Alzheimer’s.

Under current law, Medicare cannot cover any dementia screening test for people without symptoms. ❌ Congress can remove this barrier like they did when they created a pathway for Medicare to cover blood-based cancer screening tests. ✔️ Urge Congress to support the bipartisan Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act so Medicare can use this proven approach for Alzheimer’s. bit.ly/4kRjDXU
