Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives

Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives VMDAEC represents a family of 16 locally owned electric cooperatives in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware, serving nearly 2 million people.

Electric cooperatives are consumer-owned, state-chartered electric utilities. The Association is the largest consumer organization in each of the three states. VMDAEC has proven to be of considerable value in providing coordination of activities concerning matters being considered at the national level by the Rural Utilities Service (RUS), the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA

), the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation (CFC), the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative, Federated Rural Electric Insurance Exchange and CoBank. VMDAEC’s role in providing key legislative, marketing, communications and training support has increased substantially in recent years due to the growth of state and federal laws and regulations affecting the electric utility industry.

Association staff, board chairman Dr. Frank Bacon and board director Bob Jones were honored to support our member, Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative, for their annual meeting in Chase City tonight. Member-owners from the communities nearby heard updates about MEC’s strong business results and ongoing efforts to ensure reliable and affordable electricity is delivered every day. These annual meetings serve to educate member owners about their electric co-op, issues facing the energy industry, and vote for fellow citizens to serve on the co-op’s board of directors. That’s the Cooperative Difference.

Who will build, maintain and innovate the electric grid of tomorrow?

At VMDAEC, we're working with our member cooperatives to answer that question today.

From introducing young women to careers in the energy industry through Girl Power® Camp to supporting apprenticeships, technical training and mentorship programs, we're helping create opportunities for the next generation of cooperative leaders and skilled professionals.

Thank you to Cooperative Finance Corporation (CFC) for highlighting how electric cooperatives are investing in people, strengthening communities and preparing for the future.

VMDAEC staff were proud to support our member Craig-Botetourt Electric Cooperative at their annual membership meeting in New Castle today. "Gathering our member-owners and getting their input is not just a tradition, it's a vital part of how our 16 member cooperatives operate," said Brian Mosier, President and CEO of the Association. "Electric cooperative members are not just customers. They are part owners in our organizations which were formed with the sole purpose of serving them and fellow residents of rural communities. These annual meetings give our cooperatives the chance to update members about their operations and get their input on how the cooperative does business. It's a model dating back to the early days of electrification--90 years ago at Craig-Botetourt--and one we continue to support because it is what makes the Cooperative Way so different from other businesses."

Brian Mosier, VMDAEC president and CEO, joined national electric cooperative leaders in Washington D.C. this week to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Rural Electrification Act, which established the framework for electric cooperatives to power rural communities and allow farmers to thrive.

“It was an honor today to join other cooperative and electric industry leaders to celebrate the anniversary of legislation that allowed rural parts of Virginia, Maryland and Delaware to thrive into the 21st century,” said Brian. “As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, and as we recognize nine decades of rural electrification, it is clear that electric cooperatives continue to play a vital role in building upon the vision of our founders and using the Cooperative Principles to help our nation thrive.”

Strengthening Partnerships to Power Virginia’s Communities

VMDAEC was proud to host judges and staff from the State Corporation Commission at our Glen Allen office yesterday. The SCC is the Virginia regulatory authority for the energy industry.

The forum fostered closer relationships while allowing leaders from Virginia’s 13 electric cooperatives and senior association staff to share how we advocate for our member-owners to keep electricity safe, reliable and affordable.

🎓 Investing in the future of our communities.

The VMDAEC Education Scholarship Foundation has awarded $165,000 in scholarships to deserving high school seniors across Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. These students represent the next generation of leaders, innovators and skilled professionals — and we’re proud to help support their educational journeys.

Electric cooperatives are built on commitment to community, and empowering students through education is one more way we put that principle into action.

Congratulations to all of this year’s scholarship recipients! 👏
