An estimated 100 to 200 people use the new fields every day, though their layout make them inappropriate for certain leagues.

Work is underway by the Peninsula School District’s contractor on major upgrades to the lower Gig Harbor High School sports field and track. The project includes replacing the grass field with new synthetic turf, resurfacing the well-used track, upgrading the field event locations, installing lights, and adding additional bleachers with ADA-accessible seating. The project is scheduled to be completed by October.

These enhancements represent a significant investment in our students, athletes, and community organizations, creating a more modern, accessible, and durable facility for athletics, activities, and school events for years to come. A big thank you goes to the School Board for prioritizing athletic facilities. Board members have also committed to upgrading other athletic and physical education facilities around the district as funding allows.

Unfortunately, the GHHS track, which has been used for decades by community members not affiliated with an organized group, will no longer be accessible for informal public use, such as running on the track. Once the project is complete, the track and field will be locked behind 8-foot fencing and available only to school groups or those paying an hourly rental rate. Hopefully this change is something that can be reconsidered.

Reading this article, it sounds like Peninsula School District may be starting to leave room to back away from the mini jumbotron, which the district described as an “LED scoreboard as a scaled-down version of one you might see at a Mariners or Seahawks game — one that can show videos and game replays.” In the past, the district has funded scoreboards, readerboards, and signage through donations. However, that approach has not been mentioned here, and questions about donations for turfing the baseball infields, lighting, and other improvements remain unanswered.

Still, it raises an obvious question: why is such a fancy piece of equipment needed at a field that cannot support most varsity sports, while the district stadium has a scoreboard on its last legs and in near-constant need of repair?

The Peninsula School District is also looking to replace the high school baseball infields, not with synthetic turf, but with DuraEdge, a brand of engineered soil. The school board was briefed on this potential project at its April 7 meeting. As presented to the board, the cost “would be approximately $400k total (GHHS/PHS) plus approximately $400k for Title IX offset.”

But is dumping more soil — brand name or not — onto one field built on a wetland, and another with an improper slope over nearly impervious clay, really the best choice? And will it actually be enough for the varsity baseball teams to play games on their own fields?

Investments by the Peninsula School District in physical education and athletic facilities are badly needed, and we are grateful the school board is making them. However, the allocation of those resources and the decision-making process behind them are troubling. It is concerning that the district does not provide meaningful opportunities for community involvement in decision-making, fundraising, or transparency into how these decisions are made.

Tomorrow at 5:00 PM, the ribbon-cutting for the first two fields at the Gig Harbor Sports Complex will take place!

This is a major milestone for our community and an exciting step forward for local youth sports. These first two of the six planned fields represent years of vision, partnership, and hard work, and it’s great to see them ready to open.

Gig Harbor High School is getting quite the upgrade. Part of the over $3 million track and field resurfacing, turf, and lighting project, the Peninsula School District also accepted an alternate bid for a new video screen scoreboard, approximately 8' x 25', for an added $154,100. That is a big, exciting investment, and the finished facility should look fantastic. This is clearly being set up as first-class venue.

Still, it is fair to ask: why is a jumbotron-style screen, capable of full motion video making the cut while the long-failing scoreboard at the district stadium on the Peninsula High School campus is not being replaced? Or even repaired? That board has had repeated problems over the last several years, including during varsity games and state playoff matches. Endless request to fix or replace it have been ignored or the response has been ‘we don’t have the money for that.’ Nothing says “priorities” quite like a video board at one site while those at the district’s main field are left keeping their fingers crossed hoping the scoreboard decides to cooperate.

How were these GHHS track upgrades prioritized? Where was the public process? And how did this project rank ahead of other needs that may have deserved consideration as well? Such as turfing the high school baseball infields? And a softball field? What do you think?
