Earlier this week the Rotary Club of Gettysburg hosted Gettysburg Mayor Alison Lintal along with leaders of the Good Samaritan Freemasons Lodge and Gettysburg Lions. Mayor Lintal provided an overview of her priorities for improving the lives of Gettysburg residents and provided suggestions for service organizations to assist. It was a lively, informative session with a lot of ideas exchanged. Thank you Madame Mayor for taking the time from your busy schedule to be with us.

Rotary Club of Gettysburg to Dedicate Peace Pole

GETTYSBURG, PA –The Rotary Club of Gettysburg is pleased to invite the public to the dedication of a Rotary Peace Pole, donated to the club at the Multi-District Conference last April. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 17th at 11:00 AM at the Gettysburg Recreation Park.
The Peace Pole, a global symbol of the Rotary movement's commitment to peace and international understanding, will be formally dedicated in a public ceremony. In the event of inclement weather, the dedication will be held on the rain date of Saturday, November 2nd at 11:00 AM, also at the Gettysburg Recreation Park.

"We intend this to be a public event," said Chuck Elder, President of the Rotary Club of Gettysburg. "It should be a great opportunity to highlight the efforts of Rotary and our ongoing mission to promote peace in our community and around the world. All are welcome to attend."

Where: Gettysburg Recreation Park, Gettysburg, PA

Directions:
The best place to park for the Rotary Peace Pole dedication ceremony on Saturday October 17th at 11:00 AM is at the Weinbrenner parking area at the end of South Howard Street. This parking area is situated at the west side of the Gettysburg Recreation Park. If the parking area is full, curbside parking nearby is always available.

From the Weinbrenner parking area, cross the wooden footbridge and turn right on the asphalt foot path. The dedication will occur about 300 yards along the pathway near a small grove of trees.

The Adams County Farmers Market will be in operation from 8-11 AM on Saturday making parking at the Recreation Park Office building area (Sterner Building) off limits. There is a second parking area on Long Lane known as the South Parking area. This is closest to the dog corrals. If you park there, take the asphalt footpath west so that the park is on your right. The dedication will be several hundred yards from this point across the athletic fields.

Recently, the Rotary Club of Gettysburg hosted Penn State University Professor Doug Peck in its Distinguished Speakers Series. This was his second visit to our club and he spoke on, “Dubious Practices by Groceries Causing Consumer Price Increases.” Professor Peck is an acclaimed plastics and packaging engineer who is interested in improving food quality and the natural environment through better packaging solutions. According to Professor Peck, when large grocery chains discover damaged products in their inventories, they send them to reclamation centers and charge the food producers, even if the products arrived in the stores undamaged. This leads to higher consumer prices. Many food products are damaged in shipment through careless handling or accidents but little is ever recycled or reutilized from reclamation centers. Instead, damaged products mostly wind up in landfills. Professor Peck also noted that only a small percentage of bottles and cans are ever recycled in the US because not all of the states have mandatory deposit laws, unlike the European Union that mandates a higher percentage of recycled products. However, he noted that the plastics polluting the world’s oceans mostly come from China where regulations to protect the environment are not widely enforced and many villages dump trash into rivers leading to the Pacific Ocean. A strong contingent our club's members along with a District 7390 Assistant Governor and many others performed multiple activities in support of local United Way’s Day of Caring last Saturday, September 12th. Our club prepared collection boxes for an upcoming food drive, inventoried school supplies, and moved truckloads of boxes from United Way’s old accommodations to their new location at the Outlets Mall. Members enjoyed the comradery while providing valuable support to the annual event, celebrating after by joining up for coffee at Bantam Roasters in town. Rotary has a long and proud history of support across Adams County. Join us for lunch first and third Mondays at noon in the Gettysburg Hotel.

Rotarians Celebrate Friendship at Summer Picnic

Thirty six members and guests from our club and District 7390 enjoyed an evening of delicious food and entertainment on the evening of August 27th. The event occurred at club member Kathleen Reilly's, Seven Sky Farm in Gettysburg, a cattle ranch with an event barn that features grass fed beef in an idyllic location. Members were also entertained for the second time this year by seasonal park ranger, Emily Mullen who is also a concert violinist. Emily took multiple requests to fill out an evening of enjoyment and comradery to celebrate the end of a great Rotary year and the unofficial end of summer. Special thanks to Kathleen for the hospitality and to our picnic commander, Elida Murray who not only planned and organized the event, but also cooked many of the treats and loaned the club some much needed picnic furniture. Thank you also to PDG Mary Brunski and Assistant Governors Harold Cooney and Carmen Calderon for joining us to make the event even more special.

The Rotary Club of Gettysburg welcomed Brendan Salyards, from the Good Samaritan Lodge this week. Brendan shared the history of the Free and Accepted Masons and the impact the organization had during the American Revolution. Locally, the Good Samaritan Lodge engages in philanthropic endeavors like food and clothing drives.

When local service organizations can lift each other up, it only makes Gettysburg a stronger community. Thank you again, Brendan, for sharing your time and insights with our club!

The Rotary Club of Gettysburg came out in full force this past Saturday in support of the Adams County Farmers Market and their Kid's Day. The kids learned about and tried fresh local fruit and vegetables.
