Pierre Damas Bel came to Springfield like so many of our Haitian neighbors: looking for safety, for work, and for a future. Yesterday after already losing his Temporary Protected Status and being forced into an ankle monitor by ICE, he passed away. His family believes it was su***de. They say he had grown increasingly distraught, and humiliated by how he was being treated simply for existing in a country he’d built a life in.

Pierre wasn’t a statistic. He was somebody’s son, somebody’s family, somebody who once stood proud in a cap and gown on graduation day. He deserved dignity. He deserved to be seen as a person, not a policy problem.

This is what happens when we strip people of stability, criminalize their presence, and treat human beings as threats instead of neighbors. The end of TPS didn’t just take away paperwork: it took away safety, work, and hope. And for Pierre, it took everything.

We are heartbroken. We are angry. We are NOT going to let his name disappear into a headline.

To our Haitian neighbors in Springfield: we see you, we grieve with you, and we are with you.

To everyone else: call your representatives. Demand the restoration of TPS. Demand accountability for how ICE treats the people in our community. Show up for our neighbors, not just in words, but in action.

Videos from Sunday's uplifting rally in support of the Haitian community in Springfield. And now we have just learned of the death of a young Haitian student enrolled at Wright State University. The emotional toll of being shackled and bullied by others was too much. We will share more as soon as possible. We must bring leadership groups together to fight back!!

💖🫂💪 Sunday's rally supporting Haitians in Springfield was uplifting and moving! Poems read, songs sung, information shared. Organizer Carl Ruby aaked everyone to watch for a Frontline documentary to be released in a few weeks documenting the atrocities still happening in Haiti.
