Preservation Georgetown

Preservation Georgetown Founded 1977 Preservation Georgetown's mission is to promote Georgetown's heritage through preservation advocacy, education, and community engagement.

Our Story - To preserve and promote Georgetown's heritage through preservation advocacy, education, and community engagement. America’s Bicentennial celebrations in 1976 sparked a nationwide preservation boom. In Georgetown, a group of citizens who had worked diligently on Georgetown’s Bicentennial celebration also had a heightened awareness of historic resources at the local level. It was the vis

ion of this group that led to the formation of the Georgetown Heritage Society. As its name suggests, the organization’s mission is to preserve and promote interest in Georgetown’s heritage—its historic buildings and sites and the people associated with them, as well as the documents, pictures and other records relating to them. Among PG’s lasting achievements that all Georgetown citizens still enjoy today are organizing the first Christmas Stroll, reviving the old traditional May Fair (now the Red Poppy Festival), starting the Georgetown History and Visitor Information Center (now run by the City), and continuing to grow our substantial repository of historic photographs and documents "Preservation Georgetown Collection", part of Southwestern University's Special Collections. In 2013 the Olive Street National Register Historic District was established in Georgetown. This project was initiated, managed, and funded by PG. Today Preservation Georgetown works to fulfill our mission in a variety of ways including the Preservation Fund Grant Program, an annual event designed to provide grants to citizens who are restoring historic structures, and the annual Home Tour during which we open several historic homes to the public. Proceeds from the tour are used to support other PG initiatives including informative programs and educational publications. The charge of the organization continues to expand to meet responsibly the growth and needs of the community – ever mindful of preserving the past for future generations. PG enjoys a cooperative relationship with the City of Georgetown, other organizations, and the community. We share resources, programming, and facilities to promote historic preservation and heritage tourism. We encourage all to join PG and share the camaraderie of membership through like-minded interests, regular programming, and special events! Preservation Georgetown Board of Directors (2021-2022)

Which parlor would you choose? ✨

These two spaces may share the same Victorian silhouette… but they tell completely different design stories.

🤍 A — French Victorian / Rococo Revival Inspired
Soft neutrals, gilded details, airy drapery, crystal accents, and light-filled elegance. A more refined and romantic interpretation often associated with formal parlors and feminine entertaining spaces.

🖤 B — Victorian Gothic Revival
Rich jewel tones, heavy velvet drapery, dark wood, layered texture, and dramatic mood. This aesthetic leans into the romanticism of the late 1800s — intimate, ornate, and deeply atmospheric.

Historic homes evolve over time, and decor choices completely transform how a room feels while still honoring its architectural roots.

So… which aesthetic speaks to you most?

A or B? 👇

What’s worth saving? ✨

The original wood floors.
The stained glass windows.
The handcrafted trim and wallpaper that have witnessed generations of Georgetown history.

Historic homes hold stories in their details — and preserving those details helps preserve the character of our community for future generations.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 🇺🇸

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend — it is a time to reflect on the courage, service, and sacrifice that helped preserve the freedoms we enjoy today.

As we gather with family and friends, may we also take a moment to remember those who gave everything in service to our nation.

Thank you to all who have served, and to the families who continue to carry that legacy forward.

For 10 years, the Preservation Fund Grant Program has helped preserve the homes, craftsmanship, and historic character that make Georgetown so special. ✨

Since 2016, Preservation Georgetown has invested more than $125,000 into restoration and rehabilitation projects throughout Georgetown’s historic districts — helping homeowners protect the architectural details and historic integrity that tell the story of our community.

Because preservation is about more than saving old buildings.

It’s about preserving the porches, windows, staircases, woodwork, and character that connect Georgetown’s past to its future.

As we celebrate 10 years of the Preservation Fund Grant Program during Preservation Month, we invite our community to continue investing in the places that make Georgetown feel timeless.

If you own a historic property in Georgetown’s Old Town overlays and are considering restoration or rehabilitation work, applications for the Preservation Fund Grant Program are now open.
