🇺🇸 LABOR DAY 2026 🇺🇸

Today is a chance to pause and recognize the people whose hard work makes our communities stronger.

Whether you’re building, teaching, serving, caring for others, running a business, working a shift, or putting in long hours behind the scenes your work has value, and your contribution matters.

Labor Day is a reminder that opportunity, independence, and strong communities don’t happen by accident. They’re built every day by ordinary people willing to work hard and do their part.

So take a well-earned break today. Fire up the grill, enjoy the sunshine, spend time with the people you love, and be proud of everything you’ve accomplished.

To every hardworking American: thank you for what you do.

🇺🇸 Have a safe, happy, and well-deserved Labor Day!

The Refuge in Otsego County is thrilled to have our very first Alpenfest parade in the books! We had an incredible time celebrating alongside our community, connecting with neighbors, partners, supporters, and watching the streets fill with smiles, laughter, and lasting memories.

We are especially honored to have received the “Most Original” award for our parade float.

The centerpiece of our float, “Not A Home,” was created by Kathy Musto, a former client of The Refuge who now serves as our Board Vice President. Described by many as “very impactful,” the display featured a small car filled with personal belongings to represent the heartbreaking reality of families who right here in Otsego County are forced to live in their vehicles because they have nowhere else to go.

“Not A Home was created to remind parade-goers that far too many individuals and families in Otsego County are living without stable housing, and other basic needs often in their cars and out of public view,” explained Musto.

“Homelessness can happen for many reasons, including domestic violence, job loss, substance use, mental health challenges, disabilities, and many other life circumstances. In Kathy’s case, a lengthy disability determination process cost me everything while I waited for help. The Refuge was there for me when I needed it most, and I am grateful for the opportunity to give back and help others facing similar challenges.”

We are beyond grateful to every donor, volunteer, board member, staff member, family member, and community supporter who helped make our Alpenfest parade experience such a success. Your encouragement, kind words, and overwhelming support throughout the parade meant more than we can express.

Our hope is that “Not A Home” sparks meaningful conversations and provides a deeper understanding of what many of our neighbors experience every day. We cannot ignore this issues in our community. Our numbers increase every shelter season and we must come together to address these issues. Homelessness is often hidden, but it is very real and it can happen to anyone.

A house is more than four walls; it’s safety, stability, dignity, and hope. Until everyone in our community has a place to call home, The Refuge in Otsego County will continue working tirelessly to provide shelter, resources, and compassion to those in need.

Together, we can make a difference because everyone deserves a place to call home.

Huge congratulations and thank you to Ga***rd Alpenfest for putting on a such an amazing 61st annual Alpenfest your hard work and commitment to our community never goes unnoticed and we appreciate everyone who made this happen.
