Spring is right around the corner, and there’s no better place to see beautiful blooms than your local refuge trails.

Keep an eye out around March/April for native azaleas like this one!

Our very own Mississippi Sandhill Cranes 🌿

Had the opportunity to photograph these Mississippi Sandhill Cranes back in 2023. This was my first time seeing young cranes in person, and to see them foraging with (I assume) their parents was too cool.

Just look at those miniature dinosaurs! I’m so envious of these private properties where the cranes choose to hang out 💛

Mississippi Sandhill Cranes are a subspecies, and only around 180ish exist now— which is a large jump from the 30ish that existed when the MS Sandhill Crane Refuge was established in 1975 under the also newly established Endangered Species Act. And although the cranes are a major reason for the protection of this land, the Wet Pine Savanna ecosystem that allows this species to survive has also dwindled down to nothing, with about 3% of its original range remaining.

Protecting the habitat is a major step in protecting the many cool native plants and animals that call this place home 🌿
