Gulf Coast Wounded Warriors

🎣 THIS WEEKEND WAS EPIC! ❤️
We are almost afraid to tag our sponsors because we don’t want to leave anyone out! But we would be remiss not to give them a MAJOR SHOUTOUT! Our 7th Annual Gulf Coast Wounded Warrior Fishing Tournament would not be successful without the generosity of our sponsors, local community, volunteers, and supporters near and far. THANK YOU!
No matter the size of the donation or door prize, every Boat Captain and Wounded Warrior veteran left with something given in love by YOU! That’s HUGE! Our Boat Captains donated their time, boats, and, in some cases, even their homes to honor our veterans and provide recreational therapy that supports mental health and healing.
This was about more than fishing. It was about connection, restoration, hope, and community. Lives are being changed and saved among our veterans, Boat Captains, volunteers, and supporters!

After reflecting on the weekend, I asked the Lord, “Why Gautier?” The connection between the Germanic name elements of Gautier- wald (rule/power) and hari (army/warrior)-spoke deeply to my spirit. Though the name’s precise origin is not certain, I saw a powerful message in that meaning.
Our veterans are fighting battles beyond the battlefield. As they face trauma and mental health challenges, they are reclaiming command over their lives, rediscovering their strength, and finding hope. I felt God reminding me why this mission belongs here in Gautier.
To every sponsor, supporter, volunteer, Boat Captain, and Warrior: consider yourselves blessed to be part of this mission. Your generosity matters more than you know!

A single adult needs $106,745 a year to live comfortably nationally according to MIT data.

The median Walmart cashier makes about $33,000.

The gap between those two numbers is the entire debate in this tweet.

Here's where I land on this as someone who has spent two decades in financial planning.

The sentiment is right. Work should cover the basics. A job that requires 40 hours a week of your life should at minimum allow you to pay rent, buy groceries, and keep the lights on without a second job or government assistance.

That's not a radical idea. That's the basic social contract most Americans grew up believing in.

The economics of how you get there are genuinely complicated.

A Walmart cashier earning $16 an hour working full time grosses about $33,000 a year. After taxes that's roughly $27,000.

The average one-bedroom apartment nationally runs about $1,500 a month, or $18,000 a year. That's 67% of take-home pay on rent alone before a single grocery has been bought or a single bill has been paid.

The math doesn't work. And it's not because the person isn't working hard enough.

Here's what changed.

In 1970 the ratio of home prices and rent to wages was dramatically different. A minimum wage worker could cover rent on roughly 30 hours a week of work.

Today that same calculation requires 80 or more hours in most markets. Wages moved. Costs moved faster. That gap has been widening for 50 years.

The debate about what to do about it is genuinely complicated. Minimum wage increases, housing supply reform, childcare access, healthcare costs — every policy lever has real tradeoffs and reasonable people disagree about which ones work.

But the starting point, that a full time job should cover the basics — is hard to argue with on principle.

The country got very wealthy over the last 50 years.

The question of who captured that wealth and who got left behind is the most important economic conversation America isn't having honestly enough.
