I'm sure most of us locally are familiar with these guys by now, unfortunately!

They're baaaack! 🪰 👀 Have you seen spotted lanternfly nymphs in your area? They begin hatching in April.

These invasive insects feed on more than 70 plant species, so check around your yard. If you find any, squash, stomp and smash on sight. 🥾

Another important measure is to remove any invasive tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) on your property. See the comments for resources on tree of heaven ID and treatment methods.

According to new data released today, Warren County remains in a severe drought. Almost the entire state is in either a severe or extreme drought.

If you've been by the river lately you've probably seen that the level is very low, and you can see the ground peeking out in places even towards the middle of the river. Local groundwater is low as well.

Keep watering your young or recently planted trees but otherwise please take measures to conserve water. Watering in the morning or evening hours can help more of the water go to the plant instead of losing it to evaporation. Mulching is an important factor in keeping trees from drying out -- just make sure the mulch is not actually touching the tree trunk.

The Fringe Tree, sometimes called Old Man's Beard, is a great native for this area. It even refers to Virginia in it's Latin name - Chionanthus virginicus. Give it a try.
