If Jesus paid for our sins once and for all, why does the Bible keep talking about Him as a priest?

Is the priesthood just an old religious category we've moved past?

In this study:

• Melchizedek in Genesis 14 and Psalm 110 — an Old Testament picture of a superior King-Priest
• Why the priesthood had to change (Hebrews 7:11-19)
• The New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31, and why the law could never save
• Jesus as the guarantee ("surety") of a better covenant
• Why an eternal, sinless High Priest is the only one who can save completely

Scripture covered: Hebrews 7 · Genesis 14:18-20 · Psalm 110:4; 19:7 · Jeremiah 31:31-34 · Isaiah 46:9-10 · Galatians 3:10, 24-26 · Ephesians 2:8-9 · John 1:14; 10:9; 14:6 · 1 Timothy 2:5 · 2 Corinthians 5:21

In this study, we walk through Genesis 4–5, from the first birth and the first murder to the genealogy that carries the promised seed from Adam to Noah.
We see two brothers raised in the same home who make radically different choices: Abel offers his best in faith and is commended by God (Hebrews 11:4), while Cain brings a lesser offering, refuses God's counsel, and lets unchecked anger lead him into the first murder. Along the way, we look at what Scripture means by "knowing" in marriage, the nature of sacrifice, anger, and the "way of Cain" that Jude warns about and still shows up in false religion today. We trace the lineage of Christ through Genesis 5, bringing us to Noah, and time the deluge.

Can a believer really lose their salvation? What does it actually mean to "fall away"? And why does the Bible's sharpest warning end with one of its strongest statements of security?
Join us as we work through Hebrews 6 together.

One conversation. One piece of fruit. And everything changed forever.
In the garden, a serpent whispers a question that sounds harmless.
Shame and hiding follow. And the question goes out: "Where are you?"
Buried in the judgment is a promise — a seed that would be wounded, yet crush the deceiver forever.
Paradise was lost... but not forever.

Jesus carries dozens of glorious titles — Savior, King, Wonderful Counselor — but one first-century believers understood in a way we don't is High Priest. This week we dig into Hebrews 4:14–5:14 and ask what it means that Christ is our Great High Priest: One who sympathizes with our weakness, was tested in every way, and invites us to come boldly to the throne of grace. So why do so many of us avoid that throne?

Hebrews 3–4 | Rest Diligently

We will examine Israel's wilderness generation — a people who heard God's voice, witnessed His works, and still failed to enter the rest He promised them.
Along the way, we will ask some hard questions: What actually kept that generation out of the promised land? What is this "rest" the author of Hebrews keeps pointing us toward — and is it something reserved for the afterlife, or something offered today? Why does Scripture call believers to fear even after promising that perfect love casts out fear? And most personally — have you actually entered God's rest?

Come dig into Hebrews 3–4 with us and wrestle through these questions.
Main Scripture referenced: Hebrews 3:12–19; Hebrews 4:1–13; Psalm 95:6–11; Galatians 3:3; Romans 5:6–11; Deuteronomy 1:30; Philippians 1:6
