Macomber Center We are a community for self-directed learning. We believe in children being free and learning at their own pace. Our members are registered homeschoolers.

Macomber Center is a self-directed education community for children of all ages who are growing and learning without conventional schooling. The Center is open from 9am to 5pm, 5 days a week and follows the academic year calendar. We have part-time and full-time membership options. Our members are free to follow their curiosity and pursue their interests within a rich and vibrant age-mixed community, and with the support of knowledgeable, helpful adults.

If it has wheels, it’s currently in motion. The recent warm snaps have our entire lineup of skateboards, rip sticks, and scooters running non-stop. The members are putting the gear through the wringer, but they aren’t just sticking to campus. They took the reins on the logistics and pulled off a completely member-organized trip to the skate park last week—and they’re already plotting the next one.

Last week, the capture-the-flag field underwent its annual metamorphosis into Macomber Hollow. Ringed by fairy lights, our temporary tent village hosted the ultimate camp-in: endless s’mores, games in the dark, and a proper campfire before everyone finally retreated to the coziness of their sleeping bags.

We might be holding the cold weather at arm’s length, but Winter Show prep is already well under way! On top of the usual daily jam sessions taking over the music room, members are actively selecting songs, dialing in their riffs, and organizing their own practice schedules. If the noise spilling out of the music room is any indication, this year’s show is going to be a great one.

Meet the Fall 2026 cohort of Macomber critters! When you have a massive 114-acre campus as your backyard, you end up sharing the woods with some seriously weird and wonderful locals. Between tracking down a praying mantis, foraging for chicken of the woods, spotting furtive amphibians, and a total obsession with triggering the exploding “touch-me-not” seed pods, the kids have dug up a pretty epic roster. Here is a roundup of fauna and funga we’ve crossed paths with so far this fall.

Kerry said it best: Mark. Your. Calendars! We’re bringing Peter Gray to the Macomber Center on Wednesday, October 21st at 6 PM. We’re geeking out over youth autonomy, radical trust, and restoring childhood.

This evening is open to everyone (yes, that includes you!), so rsvp via the link in our bio and join us!

When we talk about freedom, the mind often jumps straight to wide-open physical play and constant motion. But the autonomy at the heart of self-directed education is just as visible in the quiet moments. The real beauty of this model is that it gives kids the space to regulate their own pacing—the freedom to choose stillness, hit pause, and just get lost in a quiet activity.

This fall, the scrapbooking and journaling club has taken flight, producing some incredible first entries. Between the flurry of paper scraps, funky stickers, and deep concentration, this crew has carved out a distinct, hyper-focused pocket amidst the usual campus energy. As they turn blank pages into visual terrain, a really cool dynamic takes over: getting their hands busy with the materials creates a shared rhythm that naturally sparks some great conversations.

We are the luckiest ducks! Our incredible new adventure structure, custom-built by our very own Matt, has officially survived its first week—and our members have been putting it through its paces! We knew it was going to be a hit, but watching the kids instantly take ownership of the space has been a total trip.

Whether they’re defending it as a fortified bunker or launching themselves off it in impromptu parkour runs, the sheer imaginative horsepower on campus right now is off the charts!
