Our agave bloom just keeps getting more spectacular! Towering nearly 20 feet tall with a plant measuring 44 feet around, branches are now unfurling from the top of the flower stalk, creating a strange umbrella of buds just waiting to burst into bloom.

This incredible stalk has been reaching skyward since early November 2025, and the show is far from over.

The agave is not the only thing blooming in the Succulent Garden this summer. With more than 150 species and cultivars, there is always something fascinating to discover.

Did you know? Nearly all succulents are flowering plants. Some bloom every year, while others wait decades before producing their spectacular flowers. From tiny blossoms to towering flower stalks like this agave, every bloom is unique and incredible.

Come explore the Succulent Garden this summer and see what is blooming!

🌿🎨 Art Explorers traded four walls for fresh air and found inspiration around every bend at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens.

MCBG staff members Sarah DeAngelo and Annabel Willis joined the group for a morning of art en plein air. The artists warmed up with playful drawing exercises, including plant figure studies featuring a towering Gunnera leaf. They then created botanical drawings inspired by a colorful mix of blooms from the Perennial Garden, before slowing down for a little “nature bathing” to explore how time in nature can be a powerful tool for relaxation and mindfulness.

The morning continued with a wander through the Organic Demonstration Vegetable Garden, where Horticulturist Phoebe Hanson shared what is currently growing. Along the way, participants sampled sweet snap peas straight from the vine and delighted in watching a family of baby quail scurry through the garden beds.

It was a joyful reminder that creativity flourishes when we slow down, look closely, and let nature lead the way.

Art Explorers is a Fort Bragg nonprofit creative arts program and progressive studio that empowers neurodivergent adults and adults with physical disabilities through artistic expression, community, and creative exploration. We are honored to partner with organizations like Art Explorers that help make creativity, connection, and the healing power of nature accessible to all. 💚

Some of the MCBG crew was out and about in the Bay Area last week! We were thrilled to participate in the annual conference of the American Public Gardens Association, connecting with public garden professionals from across North America and beyond.

Eight MCBG staff members attended the conference, with several sharing their expertise through presentations and panel discussions.

This group had the opportunity to visit the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, Filoli, the Gardens of Alcatraz, and more. Thanks to all from APGA and these stunning public gardens for putting together this botanical and historical dream.

The conference provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from industry leaders, showcase the innovative work happening here, and gather fresh inspiration to bring back to Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. We returned energized, inspired, and excited to put new ideas into practice as we continue to grow as a garden, community resource, and destination for all. 🌿✨
