Some of the MCBG crew was out and about in the Bay Area last week! We were thrilled to participate in the annual conference of the American Public Gardens Association, connecting with public garden professionals from across North America and beyond.

Eight MCBG staff members attended the conference, with several sharing their expertise through presentations and panel discussions.

This group had the opportunity to visit the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, Filoli, the Gardens of Alcatraz, and more. Thanks to all from APGA and these stunning public gardens for putting together this botanical and historical dream.

The conference provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from industry leaders, showcase the innovative work happening here, and gather fresh inspiration to bring back to Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. We returned energized, inspired, and excited to put new ideas into practice as we continue to grow as a garden, community resource, and destination for all. 🌿✨

Yesterday was a great day! 💦 A little unexpected June rain helped wash the dust from the plants and quench the thirst of local wildlife. We also had the pleasure of hosting a wonderful group of public garden professionals from around the nation and the globe.

The annual conference of the American Public Gardens Association kicked off with energy and excitement, and one of the conference tours made its way to our rural stretch of coastline. With nearly 600 member gardens and thousands of professionals across North America and beyond, APGA represents a remarkable network of expertise and innovation in public horticulture.

We were honored to share how a mild climate and a small-but-mighty staff can create a lasting impact. Thank you to everyone who braved the winding roads to visit us—we loved welcoming you and exchanging ideas for a greener future! 🌱💚

This agave death bloom began its ascent at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens in early November 2025, but now the real spectacle is beginning. At the top of the towering stalk, branches are rapidly emerging. The arms will unfurl and burst into clusters of yellow, nectar-rich flowers.

Blooms will open in sequence, drawing in hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators for a lively aerial feast. This dramatic display marks the plant’s grand finale. Once pollinated and the seed is set, the agave will complete its life cycle and fade. But it does not leave quietly. Many agaves ensure their legacy by producing pups at the base or tiny plantlets along the stalk, setting the stage for the next generation to rise.

👆Sizing it up
The death bloom stalk is approximately 20 feet tall, that’s taller than one adult giraffe! The parent plant is about 44 feet around and roughly 14 feet across, which is wider than a full-sized SUV.

Come check it out often… just ask our staff to point you in the right direction and look up ⬆️
