The most frustrating thing about drowning prevention is that it tends to take a tragedy to drive urgency and action. I’ve complained about it with early childhood pool safety for years. Why wait until something bad happens to get really strong on your pool safety game? And then, I found myself caught in the same cycle. We have the privilege to spend our summers on the lake and boating is a big piece of the fun. We wore our life jackets, avoided busy weekends and tried to stay safe and alert. Still, there were gaps in our knowledge… there still are… but we are learning and our mission to save lives remains central to all we do.

This is how we feel about our jobs, these kids and these skills!

Our strong swimmers ages 9-17 know that it’s cool to wear life jackets in lakes. Of course, when they were very little, we prioritized teaching them to how to use *potentially* life saving self-rescue skills in the pool. Once they had these skills they earned the privilege to spend more time exploring new environments including the lake and boat. We always were life jackets on our boat and in our big, busy, choppy lake.

One time, the oldest kid on our team asked me if he needed a life jacket too. I told him that statistically, he needed it more than the littler kids.

5 out of 7 of these kids had the privilege to take self-rescue lessons as littles and they’ve all been swimming independently for years and years. Many have even been on swim teams!

We believe that saving lives occurs when there is critical thinking, readiness to pivot and adapt, and continued learning. The realization that strong water safety strategies must consider the aquatic environment, age and skill level of each “swimmer”, competency of caretakers and water watchers, weather and water conditions and statistics surrounding aquatic emergencies is key!
