L'Arche Chicago

L'Arche Chicago L'Arche Chicago is a community of people with and without disabilities sharing life together in faith

Our community is anchored around three homes on the west side of Chicago and Forest Park. In each home, four adults with disabilities ("core members") share life with assistants who come to stay for a year or more.

What a fun morning! Thank you, ABC 7 Chicago, for welcoming Anders and Mic onto the 7:00 am news to chat about our community’s mission and our upcoming 12th Annual L’Arche Golf Classic. 📺📽️

Anders enjoyed sharing his plans for next Monday’s outing. When describing our community, Anders perfectly captured L’Arche’s mission of belonging by saying, “L’Arche is like a family. Someone is always around in the homes.”

If you haven’t registered for our golf outing, there’s still time. Get your golf or dinner tickets: larchechicago.org/golf ⛳

Iggy's using his gifts to make his community a better place. 🍎🥕

Each Thursday, Iggy and Camille, an assistant, hop in the Angel House van to head to the Austin Harvest food market. There, they pick up four bags of fresh produce and snacks to deliver to the free food fridge in front of New Jehovah MB Church, fondly remembered as Elbert’s church.

We’re so inspired by the way Camille and Iggy give back to the community surrounding Angel House. 🏡🏫🏢

This month, we’re celebrating 10 years of Friendship House.🏡🎉

Over the last decade, Friendship House has been a gathering place for countless pool matches between Elbert, our first core member, and dozens of assistants. It’s been a haven of comfort for guests who have shared morning coffee or an occasional hard cider with Tim, a core member, and a place of joy for assistants who have joined Chris for a drive to lunch at Portillo’s.

In 2023, when the home grieved the loss of Elbert, Friendship House found solace in simple moments: shared dinners, crafting afternoons, and walks with the home’s dog, Allie. When the time came to welcome a new core member, Lisa, the home enthusiastically embraced her calm, creative, and caring nature. Soon, the home was once again filled with renewed energy, karaoke parties, and spa days.

To celebrate a decade of memories, Friendship House held an anniversary party featuring a spicy chicken tasting competition, a running race at Chris’s request, and the hanging of Lisa’s Friendship House poem in the dining room.

Have you ever visited Friendship House? What made your visit meaningful? Share your memories of the home in the comments below!💙

Another wonderful Disability Pride Parade is in the books!🌈🥳

Building an inclusive community begins with celebrating the unique gifts and voices of people with disabilities. As we journeyed from the Harold Washington Library to Daley Plaza, we were surrounded by hundreds of advocates, allies, and friends, all united in celebrating disability pride.

We left the parade filled with joy, knowing our voices joined countless others in calling for a more inclusive world where people with disabilities are celebrated, valued, and empowered.

Now that was a Donut Day!🍩🌟

Anders arrived bright and early, Mark jumped in at the fryer, Jodi enjoyed her very first Donut Day, and the line wrapped around the church at the Oak Park Farmers Market.

That's what happens when our community shows up!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by for a donut, to the full team of volunteers who kept the morning moving with energy and laughter, and to Pilgrim Congregational Church in Oak Park, Illinois, for inviting L’Arche Chicago to be part of this beloved Oak Park tradition.❤️

Our 12th Annual L’Arche Golf Classic is next month! As we prepare for another fun day on the green, we’ve been reminiscing about our favorite Golf Classic memories over the years. Many of them include Anders, who’s attended every outing alongside his family and friends.

This year, Anders celebrated his 10th anniversary as a L’Arche Chicago core member. Over the past decade, he has brought steady joy, welcoming hospitality, and tradition to our community. At gatherings, he makes sure everyone has a chair and a plate set, and after dinners, Anders leads a candlelit liturgy that offers his housemates a comforting space to reflect and pray.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Founders Day BBQ!🍔🫶

Walking into Peace House, the warmth of our community was abundant. There is simply no better way to describe the BBQ than as a family reunion.

The kitchen table overflowed with handmade dishes brought to share. Former assistants returned to reconnect and introduce their children, who quickly became friends while playing yard games together.

Before sharing a meal, we gathered for a prayer, reflecting on our past and celebrating the wonderful gifts each individual has brought to community. We’re so grateful to everyone who helped make this special tradition possible.
