There are many misconceptions about midwifery care—but midwives play an important role in supporting families across a variety of healthcare settings. 💙

Midwives may provide prenatal, birth, postpartum, gynecologic, and educational support while working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals.

At Safer Birth in Bama, we believe education and informed conversations help families better understand the many parts of maternity care.

💬 What’s something you wish more people knew about midwives or maternal healthcare?

Doulas are increasingly being recognized in maternal health systems—not just for the support they provide, but for the outcomes they influence.

Research consistently links continuous doula support during labor with lower C-section rates, fewer medical interventions, and improved newborn health outcomes. Some studies report up to a 40% reduction in C-sections when doulas are present.

The impact is especially significant for families facing systemic barriers—low-income communities, women of color, and those navigating language or cultural differences.

A large-scale research model estimated that doula support could save the U.S. healthcare system $91 million through reduced interventions and complications during childbirth. This is one reason some states have begun expanding Medicaid coverage and pilot programs for doula services.

But access is still not equal.

Many families must pay out of pocket, often around $1,200 per birth. This means the support most strongly linked to better outcomes is still out of reach for many who need it most.

When care depends on income or insurance coverage, outcomes reflect that gap.

Some experiences in maternal care have been normalized—but shouldn’t be. 💙

Every family deserves to feel heard, respected, and supported throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care.

At Safer Birth in Bama, we advocate for care that is safe, evidence-based, and centered on dignity and communication.

💬 What’s one thing you believe should never be “normal” in maternal care?

We love seeing access to midwifery care continue to grow in Alabama. 💙

Please join us in welcoming Hannah Cunningham, CNM, as she begins serving families in her new role as a certified nurse midwife.

Expanding access to compassionate, evidence-based maternity and gynecologic care matters for families and communities across our state.

Congratulations to Hannah on this exciting next step in supporting women and families through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond. ✨

We’re so excited to welcome Hannah Cunningham to our team as our newest Midwife! 💜

Hannah may look familiar to some of our patients because she was a labor and delivery nurse at Madison Hospital before going back to school to become a certified nurse midwife!

Hannah will begin taking new patients soon and we cannot wait for our patients to get to experience midwifery care in office! From routine gynecologic care to pregnancy and postpartum support, we’re excited to continue expanding the personalized, compassionate care we offer our community.

Please join us in giving Hannah a warm welcome we’re so happy to have her joining our team.
