Building the Foundation #1 💙 | When a Mother Says, “I Need Help.”

Imagine being a new mother and realizing you aren't okay.

You know you need help, but finding the right support while caring for yourself and your baby can feel overwhelming.

Through Project LUNA, Safer Birth in Bama helps connect eligible women with counseling, breastfeeding support, parenting education, and community resources.

The Foundation of Support helps make this kind of care possible.

Maternal health isn't the responsibility of just one person or one profession. It takes collaboration, communication, and a shared commitment to supporting families throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. 💙

From doctors and midwives to nurses, doulas, lactation consultants, therapists, community advocates, and loved ones—each person brings something valuable to the table.

At Safer Birth in Bama, we believe that improving outcomes starts with working together to ensure families have access to respectful, evidence-based care and the support they need.

And if you believe in this mission, there are many ways to be part of the team—whether that's sharing our posts, volunteering, attending our events, or becoming a monthly supporter to help sustain this work throughout the year. 💙

We’re grateful to see significant investment in the future of rural healthcare across Alabama. 💙

The Alabama Rural Health Transformation Program has awarded 138 grants totaling more than $144 million to healthcare providers and institutions across the state.

We’re especially encouraged to see funding supporting maternal health, rural workforce development, mental health, telehealth, and expanded access to care closer to home.

There is still work to do, but investments like these are an important step toward building healthier, more connected communities across Alabama.

Thank you to the organizations and leaders working to strengthen rural healthcare in our state.

What happens when maternity care is simply too far away?

For some Alabama families, getting prenatal, birth, and postpartum care means traveling outside their own communities.

A recent WSFA report highlighted the experience of Latasha Bell, a Lowndes County mother who had to travel to Montgomery throughout her pregnancy. When she went into labor, the distance became more than an inconvenience—it became a serious concern about getting to the hospital in time.

Her story is a reminder that access to maternity care isn't just about having a provider. It's about being able to reach that care when you need it.

According to the March of Dimes, about 1 in 3 Alabama counties is considered a maternal health care desert.

We can—and must—work toward making maternity care more accessible for Alabama families.

Respectful maternity care isn't only about what care is provided—it's also about how it's provided.

Every family deserves to be heard, informed, and treated with dignity throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
