Check out what's been happening at Zega-Lockatong Preserve!

This morning we hosted our first monthly workday at Zega-Lockatong, where we are supporting tree regeneration in an old growth forest. We are removing invasive species that encroach as the canopy opens up from beech leaf disease and protecting saplings from herbivory with cages. So far, we've found 13 species of native tree seedlings, such as the flowering dogwood and sugar maple seen here.

We have several events this fall at Zega-Lockatong Preserve, so come join us! Our next Stewardship Saturday is September 19th, and Fall Fest (featuring fall migration & foliage walks) is October 24th. Check out the details & sign up: https://www.hunterdonlandtrust.org/events/

We are grateful for support of our stewardship efforts at Zega-Lockatong Preserve from the Lower Delaware Wild & Scenic River Program.

🦋 At our most recent nature program, we explored the meadows of Muddy Run Preserve! We caught and tagged our first monarch of the fall season, learned about a rare butterfly host plant growing on the preserve, and tried our hand at the perfect butterfly catching technique.

Fall programs have been posted so that you can join us for the next nature adventure! Check out our website at www.hunterdonlandtrust.org/events for details and to sign up.

Yesterday we said a very fond farewell to our summer conservation intern, Maddy Flory. In addition to working with our stewardship team on volunteer events, educational programs, and land management, Maddy independently created a new map to highlight HLT preserved lands throughout the county and modernized many of our GIS processes. She has been an incredible addition to our team this summer, and we wish her all the best as she continues her college career!

Many thanks to the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education's Career Accelerator Internship Grant Program for making this internship possible!

We will walk along the forested stream and wetlands, habitats buzzing with vireos, yellowthroats, orioles, and red-winged blackbirds. The adjoining meadow hosts colorful bluebirds, goldfinches, and tree swallows. Bring your binoculars!
