St Magdalen Church St. Magdalen de Pazzi Church exists to echo Jesus' call to all: "Come and Follow Me!"

Our patroness, Saint Magdalen de Pazzi poetically prayed, “Come Holy Spirit! Consume in us whatever prevents us from being consumed in you.” Although this may seem like a pious expression that only a distant, unfamiliar saint could make, truly, it expresses the deepest desire of each one of us. As we race about, pressured on every side to meet expectations and achieve all the things in life that w

e hope will make us happy, what each of us truly wants, deep down, is that all of our nagging questions, all of our doubts, all of our hurts, and all of our sins would be removed so that we could rest in God’s truth, in his love, in his justice, and in his mercy- in other words, to be totally consumed in God. Our parish exists to echo Jesus’ call to each one of us to follow him, for he is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the answer to our deepest human desires; he is the gate which leads to the loving arms of God our father.

Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist.

At the dawn of the New Testament, John the Baptist, unable to refrain from speaking of the law of the Lord and rejecting any compromise with evil, gave his life in witness to truth and justice and thus also became the forerunner of the Messiah in the way he died.

“The one who came to bear witness to the light and who deserved to be called by that same light, which is Christ, a burning and shining lamp, was cast into the darkness of prison. . .The one to whom it was granted to baptize the Redeemer of the world was thus baptized in his own blood” (Saint Bede).

The Church proposes the example of numerous saints who bore witness to and defended moral truth even to the point of enduring martyrdom, or who preferred death to a single mortal sin.

In raising them to the honor of the altars, the Church has canonized their witness and declared the truth of their judgment, according to which the love of God entails the obligation to respect his commandments, even in the most dire of circumstances, and the refusal to betray those commandments, even for the sake of saving one’s own life.

Martyrdom, accepted as an affirmation of the inviolability of the moral order, bears splendid witness both to the holiness of God’s law and to the inviolability of the personal dignity of man, created in God’s image and likeness.
