Rooster's General Store sits in Green Cove Springs, and a lot of people drive past it without knowing what is actually inside.

Local meats, produce, eggs, cheese, bone broth, small-batch pickles and regular grocery basics. Owner Todd Knowles walked me through the whole store.

If you are halfway through making dinner and realize you are missing something, that is a couple of minutes instead of a run up to Fleming Island.

500 of these are going out this Friday at Food Truck Friday. Teal out for the Jags, limited edition👌, and when they’re gone they’re gone.

Come say hi at Spring Park in Green Cove Springs, September 4th, 5 to 9:30. Wear teal. Food trucks, live music, and the whole park turning out for the season opener.

Food Truck Friday is also running a free community raffle. Visit the sponsors between 5 and 8, then names get called from the stage at 8:30. Ten winners going home with autographed merch, jerseys, footballs, or game tickets. You have to be there to win. There’s also a $50 prize for the best Jags super fan, judged at the stage at 7PM.

Save this and share it with whoever you’re bringing Friday.

Every license plate reader on Clay County roadways is coming down. The Clay County Sheriff's Office released the announcement on August 31, 2026, pointing to a memo issued by the Florida Department of Transportation as the reason. The scope is the part worth noticing, because FDOT has authority over state right of way, which in Clay means roads like US 17 and Blanding Boulevard, while the release covers all Clay County roadways.

Sheriff Michelle Cook used most of the release to lay out what the readers have done since 2018, including locating a missing 76 year old woman from South Carolina whose vehicle was found in Middleburg, identifying a homicide suspect in a stabbing, and recovering a 10 year old taken in a custody interference case near the Florida and Alabama line. Her statement says the decision does not hinder or sway the agency's work.

I went back through the Clay County stormwater meeting and pulled some of the moments that stood out.

With nearly five hours of public comment alone, there was way more I could’ve included. But for those who couldn’t be there and don’t have six hours to watch the entire meeting, here are some of the highlights.

The stormwater assessment ultimately passed 3–2.

The stormwater assessment passed last night, 3 to 2, after nearly five hours of public comment.

The assessment applies to property in unincorporated Clay County and takes effect October 1st.

I wasn’t able to be there in person, but I watched the meeting online, and regardless of how you feel about the assessment, I was blown away by how many people showed up and made their voices heard.

Grumpy's Fleming Island opens September 28.

I got inside today while it's still under construction. The exterior is done. The interior is not. This is an early look at it before anybody else has been in there.

Met Daniel DeLeon, President and CEO of Grumpy's, and Dell Hoard Jr., the franchise owner opening this one. Dell already runs the Middleburg Grumpy's. Full disclosure, Dan and I went to Clay High together.

Grumpy's opened in 1999 in Orange Park, started by a retired Navy cook. Daniel DeLeon bought it in 2017 and franchised it in 2019. It
has since landed on the Jacksonville Business Journal Fast 50 in 2021 and 2023.

They told me the September 28 date is good and that they'll let me know if it moves. If it does, you'll hear it here.

Clay County just opened applications for Commissioner for a Day.

Five high school seniors will be selected to shadow a sitting county commissioner for a full workday, meetings, site visits, the real thing.

If you've got a senior at home who's into leadership, this is worth a look. Applications are open now.

Nine million dollars. That is what Clay County is looking to collect this year, and it starts with a letter that hit mailboxes in early August.

Most people are reading the dollar amount and stopping there. The paragraph right above that number is the one worth reading. It says the maximum rate for future years is $120 per unit, up from the $85 the Board set for this year.

Your number is based on hard surface. Roof, driveway, patio, walkways. Credits were applied automatically for lots over five acres and for neighborhoods that maintain their own stormwater systems.

Unincorporated Clay only. Orange Park, Green Cove Springs, Penney Farms and Keystone Heights are excluded.

The ordinance passed July 28. The August 25 hearing at 5 p.m., 477 Houston Street in Green Cove Springs, is where the Board sets the rate. Collection starts on the November tax bill.
