Catskill Neighbors, Inc.

Catskill Neighbors, Inc. Catskill Neighbors, Inc. Catskill Neighbors is a community based volunteer organization founded by Reverend Ralph Darmstadt of Fleischmanns, NY.

is a community based all volunteer organization...Our mission is to help seniors wishing to remain safe and comfortable in their own homes. We are a recognized NYS Domestic Not-for-Profit Corporation and a Tax Exempt 501(c)(3) organization. Our mission is to help seniors wishing to remain safe and comfortable in their own homes. As time goes by, families and friends often move on and are unable to

provide emotional or material support for aging loved ones whose physical abilities or income may diminish. What happens then? Where does a person turn for help? There are government social service agencies which provide important aid, but sometimes simple everyday needs can be filled by individual caring volunteers. That’s where Catskill Neighbors may be of assistance in offering friendship, companionship and a helping hand to local residents. A copy of our most recently filed financial report is available from the Charities Registry on the New York State Attorney General’s website https://ag.ny.gov/resources/organizations/charities-nonprofits-fundraisers or, upon request, by contacting the New York State Attorney General, Charities Bureau, 28 Liberty Street, New York, NY 10005, or Catskill Neighbors, Inc. at PO Box 353 Fleischmanns, NY 12430. PRESS RELEASE

Delaware County currently contracts Delaware Opportunities, Inc. to provide nutrition services to Delaware County residents 60 years or older and their spouses. The program operates six congregate meal sites as well as home delivered meals for those seniors that cannot make it to a meal site. The program is funded through state and federal subsidies, the Delaware County Board of Supervisors, and donations. Recent contract discussions have led to a review of the program and alternatives to the current way Senior Meals is administered. Delaware County is committed to providing the highest quality nutrition for our senior population, keeping meal sites throughout the county, and supporting home delivery where needed.

During the most recent contract negotiations with Delaware Opportunities, Inc., we have determined the costs associated with contracting the service out is not sustainable based on previous year’s budget increases. Today, the Delaware County Board of Supervisors Office for the Aging (OFA) oversight committee met to discuss the contract issues and possible resolutions. The committee moved to provide for a pro-rated contract with Delaware Opportunities, Inc., set to expire on December 31, 2026, then starting in 2027 the Senior Meals program would be administered through the county rather than contracted to a third party. In the event this is not agreeable to Delaware Opportunities Inc., and they cease administration of the program immediately, Delaware County has developed a plan to continue the service without interruption as a County-run program.

The County would provide Senior Meals through a food service provider that can prepare hot, home cooked, nutritionally balanced meals for the same donation as is currently offered at all six congregate meal sites. Home deliveries will remain the same and all current employees of the Senior Meals program will have the opportunity to apply to continue working with Senior Meals as a county employee. The only change would be the direct administration as a County-run program.

Beginning in 2027 Delaware County will include Senior Meals as a fixed line item in the overall county budget, through the OFA. The full program staffing, costs, meal site operations, home delivery costs, and administration will be accounted for and no longer left to a third-party contract. The same state and federal programs will continue to support senior nutrition and will be used to offset the direct cost of the program as part of the County budget. Delaware County senior nutrition programs are a priority of the Delaware County Board of Supervisors’, and our efforts are to ensure no meals will be missed as we make this transition.

GRANT AWARD FOR THE GOOD COMPANY CLUB PROGRAM IN PINE HILL

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation has awarded a grant of $12,000 to the St. John/St. Francis de Sales parish community to expand a highly successful GOOD COMPANY CLUB currently hosted by the Phoenicia Methodist Church on Mondays to a second day (Thursdays) and second site at the Pine Hill Community Center.

This 5 hour structured program, which will begin in Pine Hill on July 9, is designed to provide a safe space and stimulating activities for seniors experiencing cognitive decline, while their caregivers get some respite time.

As a partner in the grant process, Catskill Neighbors, Inc. will oversee the grant and recruit both participants and volunteers. Because more and more people know a friend, neighbor, or family member with this disease, we invite the entire community to participate in a 3-part course that will build knowledge, bust myths, and identify local resources that can help these seniors overcome isolation and stay connected to the life of our community.

The course begins on April 30, from 1 - 3 pm at the Pine Hill Community Center. For more information, or to refer a prospective senior/family who would benefit from this program, contact the Catskill Neighbors recorded line at 845-280-0459, and we will return your call.

We are thrilled to double our impact in the community, and thank The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation for this opportunity!
