Reclaiming the Run

A safer future for women runners starts with honest conversations like this one.

New podcast now available wherever you get your podcasts or on our YouTube channel!

For many women, running brings confidence, healing, strength, and joy. But it can also come with fear... a reality that too many female runners know all too well.

In this episode of In Fearless Conversation, I’m joined by Dena Lewis and Sydney Johnson of Running Mate, the first real-time, on-demand run-share app created to help make outdoor running safer.

Dena shares her deeply personal story of surviving two assaults while running alone and how those experiences inspired her mission to help women reclaim their confidence, freedom, and sense of safety outdoors.

This past weekend, together with 261 Fearless Club UK, we came together for our Women’s Running Technique Advisor Program: a weekend filled with learning, movement, and plenty of fun.

We explored everything with lessons on muscle function and structure, agonist and antagonist muscles, strengthening key muscle groups, and practicing proper exercise techniques that support healthier, stronger movement.

But as always at 261 Fearless, learning wasn’t confined to the classroom. Through activity, practice, and lots of energy along the way, we were reminded that education becomes even more powerful when it happens in community.

Because confidence grows when we understand how to move safely. Community grows when we help others move safely.

Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the weekend such a meaningful experience. 💜✨

Good news! Regular exercise is a powerful way to improve the executive functions of your brain.
Focusing, planning & regulating your emotions, learning, thinking, and problem solving are vital to help you reach your goals. Exercise can help. Here’s how:

✨Short term benefits:
Stuck with a problem? No longer able to concentrate? Nip out for a quick run for an immediate brain boost.
A single, short run increases levels of dopamine & serotonin, which put you in a good mood, helping you focus and feel better, improving productivity.
A 20-minute run can improve your thinking skills & concentration, anywhere from 1 hour to 24 hours afterwards.
A study from 2024 found that for middle aged & older adults, participating in more moderate intensity activity, such as running or cycling, resulted in better performance on memory tests the following day. It’s not exactly clear why this is the case: it could be due to a general increase in blood flow to the brain during exercise, or stimulation of the hippocampus (the main brain area involved with memory and the release of chemicals that improve cognitive function).

✨Long term benefits:
It’s not all about the short term gains, there are important long term benefits of exercise too.
Being physically active helps preserve brain health and protect against neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzhiemer’s.
Exercise increases neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganise itself and form new connections according to what’s going on. Neuroplasticity means you can continue to learn new skills, make new memories, and recover from any injuries to the brain such as strokes. Exercise boosts BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor) and is a big driver for maintaining nerve cells and stimulating the growth of new ones.
It is very active in the hypothalamus and the pre-frontal cortex, areas of the brain responsible for memory & cognition. It’s possible that exercise causes structural changes in these areas, which remodel & rewire themselves during and after exercise to improve efficiency.
Long term, regular, moderate to vigorous exercise is an ideal way to reduce the risk of cognitive decline & dementia.
