We engage communities around mental health, substance use prevention, and positive youth development

To bring the communities of North Central Massachusetts together to improve education and awareness of the harmful effects of substance use on youth, with and emphasis on Alcohol, To***co and misuse of Prescription Medication through environmental strategies such as Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA). LUK Prevention has adopted the Healthy Community Principles which are:
Broad definition of health
Broad definition of community
Shared vision and values
Quality of life for everyone
Diverse resident participation and widespread community ownership
Invests in youth leadership and development
Focus on "systems change"
Capacity building using local assets and resources
Benchmark and measure process and outcomes

Throughout October the youth in our after-school programming have been working on different projects for Anti-Bullying Month. They have been learning how to express gratitude and kindness to others as well as work on communication skills to solve challenges. All of these activities are teaching the youth essential life skills that promote standing up against bullying and working with others.

Youth in our after-school programming took part in our Unity Tree activity for Unity Day last week on Wednesday. They reflected on what they are able to do to stop bullying and help those who are actively being bullied.

Below are some of their answers:

“When my friend gets bullied, I can tell the teacher”

“Tell them to stop”

“If someone is being bullied, you can talk and play with them”

“Say nice things”

Youth are peers and leaders, not just beneficiaries. 🫂 About QPR Su***de Prevention:
QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is a simple and effective su***de prevention training for community members who are 16 or older. Learn how to recognize warning signs of su***de, how to ask someone if they’re thinking about su***de, how to persuade them to get help, and how to refer them to the right support. Just like CPR or First Aid, QPR is a way for community members to make a difference and help save lives. Participants are certified in QPR upon completion of the training.

Most youth in Central Mass choose not to drink alcohol. Instead they choose to play sports, keep motivated, and hang out with friends. ⚽

As school starts back up again, we're sharing posts from our Youth Leaders with important messages about underage substance use.
