Literacy Volunteers provides free, confidential and individualized tutoring in basic literacy and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) to adults and out-of-school youths over the age of 16 through the use of professionally trained and supported volunteer tutors. Literacy Volunteers recruits screens, interviews, assesses and places students on a waiting list until matched with a volunteer

tutor. (The waiting list often is 30-40 people)

Ashburnham, Ashby, Ayer, Berlin, Bolton, Clinton, Fitchburg, Gardner, Groton, Harvard, Hubbardston, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Princeton, Shirley, Sterling, Templeton, Townsend, Westminster, and Winchendon. Literacy Volunteers is funded through the United Ways of North Central Massachusetts, which includes the Greater Gardner and Nashoba areas, the Department of Education, and private contributions.
