Have you ever experienced "frisson"?

You know that exact moment during a song when a beautiful melody takes an unexpected turn, a powerful high note hits, or a gorgeous, tight vocal chord locks into place... and suddenly you get a physical rush of goosebumps down your arms or a shiver up your spine?

There’s actually a scientific word for that: Frisson (often called "musical chills").

It happens when music stimulates our brain's reward system, releasing a little burst of dopamine because the sounds surprised or deeply moved us. Researchers say it’s a sign of being deeply connected to art and creativity!

For us, nothing triggers frisson quite like the ringing overtones of four-part acapella harmony when a chord perfectly locks in. It’s pure magic.

We want to know: What is ONE song or musical moment that gives you absolute goosebumps every single time you hear it? Drop it in the comments!

Hello, Mary Lou... Goodbye, Heart!

There’s nothing like a classic tune to get the toes tapping and the harmonies ringing! Here’s a little clip from our recent rehearsal of the 1961 Ricky Nelson favorite, "Hello Mary Lou."

Listen closely at the end for that classic barbershop cadence—our favorite part of singing these old-school gems is catching that perfect, ringing chord together.

Is this song going to be stuck in your head for the rest of the day now? (Sorry, not sorry!)

What’s your absolute favorite oldies track you’d love to hear us take on next? Let us know in the comments!

MEET A BARBERSHOP LEGEND!

We are incredibly honored to introduce you to a true piece of barbershop history right here in our community: Jim Foy!

Jim is a powerhouse bass who reached the absolute pinnacle of barbershop singing, winning the 1975 International Quartet Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Fifty years later, Jim’s passion for the music hasn't faded one bit. When asked what keeps him loving it after all these years, he didn't point to the medals or the trophies. For Jim, it’s simple: "The biggest joy is just the joy of singing. Especially singing in harmony."

We couldn't agree more, Jim! Thank you for sharing your incredible voice, your history, and your love for tight chords with all of us.

STILL BUZZING FROM DAM DAYS!

Yesterday, the Lakelanders took our tunes on the road…literally! We had an absolute blast singing our hearts out on a float in the annual Morristown Dam Days parade.

The energy from the crowd was incredible! From the waves and smiles to everyone singing along with us down the parade route, you all made us feel so welcome. There is nothing quite like the community spirit at Dam Days, and we were honored to be a part of the tradition this year.

Big thanks to the organizers for putting on a fantastic event, and an even bigger thank you to everyone who came out to cheer us on.

Missed us on the float or just want to hear more? Keep an eye on our page for upcoming performances and rehearsals. We’re always looking for new voices to join the harmony!

TRIVIA REVELATION!

The correct answer to yesterday's trivia is D) All of the above!

While local barbershops were a major social hub for guys to gather and harmonize, the style deeply evolved from African American gospel, folk, and minstrel traditions, as well as casual singing on street corners and in social clubs in the late 1800s.

Shout-out to everyone who got it right! Stay tuned for our next trivia challenge, and keep that harmony ringing!

LAKELANDERS TRIVIA TIME!

Barbershop harmony is all about those tight, ringing chords—but did you know where the style truly found its roots?

Let’s see who knows their music history! Before it hit the stages and competition floors, where did this style of four-part, unaccompanied singing primarily develop in the late 19th and early 20th centuries?

A. Inside literal local barbershops
B. On street corners and in social clubs
C. African American gospel and minstrel traditions
D. All of the above!

Drop your guess in the comments below! We’ll reveal the correct answer tomorrow!

There is nothing quite like the feeling of hitting that perfect chord where the overtones ring so loud it sounds like a fifth voice just joined the room. It’s pure magic—and honestly, it's cheaper than therapy!

What is your absolute favorite song to hear in four-part harmony? Let us know what we should add to our repertoire!

That Overblown Chord Feeling...

There is nothing quite like listening to a chord build, lock in, and absolutely ring! Here’s a little sneak peek from our latest performance, working on those beautifully tight, signature barbershop harmonies.

When all four parts hit their notes just right, the sound expands and creates those incredible overtones that make acapella music so magical to sing—and to hear!

Can you hear the different parts locking together at the end?

Drop a ❤️ in the comments if that final chord gave you goosebumps!
