As we celebrate our country's 250th Anniversary, Caritas presents William Billings' "Is Any Afflicted." A Boston native, Billings (1746-1800) is considered the country's first choral composer. He often setting scripture or the poetry of Isaac Watts sometimes creating witty paraphrases. Billings also was involved as a teacher at early American Singing Schools. He wrote "The Singing Master's Assistant," a compilation of sacred choral works with musical instruction, which included practical advice for running a Singing School. Thanks to Mr. Billings for beginning the American Choral experience!
