Raritan Headwaters Association

Raritan Headwaters Association Raritan Headwaters Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization protecting clean water for all.

Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA) is 501(c)(3) non profit environmental conservation organization located in the heart of the Raritan Basin. Our staff and volunteer base protect and advocate for clean water in the north and south branch region of the Raritan River. The 470-square-mile region provides drinking water to more than 1.5 million residents of 39 municipalities in Hunterdon, Morris, an

d Somerset Counties. The water we protect and improve moves out and beyond our watershed to thousands of additional residents in the state. RHA protects, preserves, and improves water quality and other natural resources through our highly regarded science, education, outreach and advocacy programs. The drainage basin of the entire Raritan River covers approximately 1,100 square miles, making it the largest river basin located entirely within the State of New Jersey. The South Branch of the Raritan River is 51 miles long from its source in Budd Lake to its confluence with the North Branch in Branchburg. The North Branch of the Raritan River originates as a spring-fed stream in Morris County and flows south for approximately 23 miles to its confluence with the South Branch. The Raritan River empties into Raritan Bay on the Atlantic Ocean.

Something unexpected was noticed during a community kayaking event on Budd Lake. A section of the shoreline bog appeared to be separating and sinking into the water.

RHA Lake Research Technician Claire Paul set out to find out whether it was part of a broader trend. The bog is one of a kind in New Jersey, and its health has implications for water quality, biodiversity, and the broader watershed.

What a day on the water! Our “Hooked on Fishing” derby was a reel success — young anglers discovered the joy of fishing right here at Fairview Farm. It wouldn't have happened without the wonderful support from our partners.

Thank you to the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife, and a huge thanks to our Trout Unlimited (TU) volunteers who donated their time and expertise: Nick Romanenko, an RHA board member and Central Jersey TU; Henry Bayard and Brad Fox (Hacklebarney TU); Gerry Dumont (Ridge and Valley TU); and George Cassa (Ken Lockwood Chapter TU). We're so grateful for this community!

What a day!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Shedfest at Fairview Farm. From live music and local food trucks to family activities, craft beverages, and beautiful weather, it was a wonderful celebration of community, conservation, and the outdoors.

We are grateful to the musicians, vendors, sponsors, volunteers, staff, and attendees who helped make this year's event such a success. Most importantly, thank you for supporting Raritan Headwaters' work to protect the land and water resources that sustain our region.

Events like Shedfest remind us that conservation is strongest when communities come together.

We hope to see you next year!
