Raritan Headwaters Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization protecting clean water for all.

Raritan Headwaters Association (RHA) is 501(c)(3) non profit environmental conservation organization located in the heart of the Raritan Basin. Our staff and volunteer base protect and advocate for clean water in the north and south branch region of the Raritan River. The 470-square-mile region provides drinking water to more than 1.5 million residents of 39 municipalities in Hunterdon, Morris, an

d Somerset Counties. The water we protect and improve moves out and beyond our watershed to thousands of additional residents in the state. RHA protects, preserves, and improves water quality and other natural resources through our highly regarded science, education, outreach and advocacy programs. The drainage basin of the entire Raritan River covers approximately 1,100 square miles, making it the largest river basin located entirely within the State of New Jersey. The South Branch of the Raritan River is 51 miles long from its source in Budd Lake to its confluence with the North Branch in Branchburg. The North Branch of the Raritan River originates as a spring-fed stream in Morris County and flows south for approximately 23 miles to its confluence with the South Branch. The Raritan River empties into Raritan Bay on the Atlantic Ocean.

Next up in our summer stewardship intern spotlight is Rose Falletta.

Rose spent her summer working alongside Restoration Coordinator Robert Lucas, helping track the progress of an effort to plant 10,000 trees and restore at least eight miles of stream buffer.

Her work took her to planting sites along the North and South Branch Raritan and several other local waterways, where she recorded a 77% survival rate among plantings older than one year old.

This fall, Nature Days gives kids what they need: room to explore, time to create, and outdoor adventures to discover. Join us Wednesdays in September and October at Prallsville Mills, Stockton.

Our educators will guide children through structured and unstructured learning and outdoor playtime, helping them develop the creativity and critical thinking needed to build long-lasting connections with nature.

As the summer wraps up, we’re sharing blogs from our summer stewardship interns as they reflect on their experiences. Meet Daniel Magda, who returned to a project he helped start this summer.

As an Americorps NJ Watershed Ambassador hosted at Raritan Headwaters, he assisted with the Melick's Bridge tree planting, which planted 850 trees over two years. This summer, he tracked survivorship at the site and maintained plantings at Mine Brook Park and Bernadette Morales Nature Preserve, among other projects.

The 2026 Kestrel monitoring season wrapped with exciting news. We're thrilled to report 13 nesting attempts, nine successful boxes, and 41 young Kestrels banded. That's just one short of our record!

The American Kestrel, once very common in the Upper Raritan, has declined by 80 percent in the Northeast over the last 50 years. We launched the Kestrel Partnership in 2018 to help their recovery. Learn more by visiting the link below.

We are grateful to the E.J. Grassmann Trust for a $10,000 grant to complete our accessible boardwalk at Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve, and to the Pinelands Preservation Alliance for their support in helping make this project possible.

Work is underway to create an ADA-compliant path from the parking lot to the dock at the preserve’s pond, an important habitat for wildlife and a wonderful place for visitors to observe and learn about nature.

This project is part of RHA’s continued investment in the long-term improvement and protection of Fairview Farm, ensuring the preserve remains a beautiful, welcoming, and educational place for people of all abilities to enjoy.

Congratulations to Wynn Warren, recipient of our Suki Dewey Volunteer of the Year award! Wynn served as an RHA stewardship intern for the summers of 2025 and 2026, working tirelessly each week to remove invasive species, plant trees, support boardwalk construction, and help our team in countless ways.

We are so grateful for you, Wynn, and cheering you on as you return to the University of Maine this fall.
