📆*Updated Hours at Pricketts Fort*⏱️

The Fort is closed for tours for the 2026 Season. The Visitor Center will remain open Monday through Friday from 10AM to 4PM for guests to visit the Gift Shop, Museum Gallery, and Thomas Library. The Junction Cafe will close on Saturday, October 31st and reopen in April 2027. The park grounds will be open daily as usual.

Join us at Pricketts Fort tomorrow, Saturday, October 24th to see the process of candle making as it was done in the 18th century. You will also learn some of the different methods of lighting as candles are being produced.

Regular admission applies. Tickets must be purchased at the Visitor Center and include a tour of the Fort, and Job Prickett House in addition to the demonstrations. It is a great day to head out to Pricketts Fort State Park. We are delighted to have Michael Dragoo back at Pricketts Fort this weekend to demonstrate 18th Century Hearth Cooking with our earthen bake oven, and we can already smell the fire burning in the hearth!

Demonstrations will be ongoing throughout today, Saturday, October 17th from 10am to 4pm, and tomorrow, Sunday, October 18th from Noon to 4pm. The Junction at Pricketts Fort will also be open for purchasing refreshments in the park.

This is the perfect weekend to visit Pricketts Fort State Park! Join us today, Saturday, October 3rd,10 am to 4 pm and tomorrow, Sunday, October 4th, Noon to 4 pm to experience living history in person!

While the war was ever widening and the danger increasing for backcountry inhabitants all through the autumn of 1776, the work of life went on. Clothing was made and mended, meals were cooked, and other daily chores continued. To a lesser degree, so did the diversions like writing letters or reading the news. Members of the West Augusta Battalion, a living history group, will be at Pricketts Fort on October 3rd and 4th alongside the site staff to illustrate life in the late eighteenth-century backcountry of Virginia!

Throughout Saturday and Sunday, members of the West Augusta Battalion, a living history group, will be on hand portraying the 1776 garrison of Pricketts Fort.

Ongoing demonstrations will include ration preparation, hearth-cooking, equipment maintenance, paperwork, and military training.

SATURDAY, THE 3RD of OCTOBER, 2026:
⏱️ 1000 - 1200 – Roll call, muster, 1764 Manual of Arms, & basic marching maneuvers
⏱️ 1200 - 1300 – Lunch
⏱️ 1300 - 1530 – Advanced marching maneuvers

SUNDAY, THE 4th of OCTOBER, 2026:
⏱️ 1200 - 1400 – Drill, maneuver, and firing demonstrations.

Virginia’s backcountry in 1776 was as yet a minor theatre in the growing war of the American Revolution. But with ever-expanding manpower requirements for both the Continental army and Virginia’s local defenses, participation in some military institution for males between the ages of 16 and 50 was almost universal. Significant training was a part of their many duties, even in wartime. Linear warfare required strict command and control and movements executed with precision.

Learn more on the weekend of October 3rd and 4th when the West Augusta Battalion, a living history group, will be on hand demonstrating both individual and unit-level training of the era.
