Rotary serves!

Today some of our Rotary Club of Hurst-Euless-Bedford members volunteered at the Midwest Food Bank packing food to ship out to 110 food pantries across the state of Texas.

Our meeting speaker this week was Dena Kirk and had the interesting topic of "Why Overthinking Doesn't Work."

When we overthink, it becomes confusing and easier to give up on the task. We tend to be harder on ourselves and normally doesn't result in completing tasks efficiently.

Dena took a couple of volunteers to prove this point. One she gave simple instructions to. Clear and concise instructions. Easy to understand and perform. To the other volunteer, she said first "don't take this personally! Haha!" and then proceeded to give one instruction after another in rapid succession and then changing in the middle while they were trying to complete just the first part. Then comes our negative self-talk "It's not that hard, what is so hard about this simple task...." It was easy to see volunteer #2 get frustrated. It is easy to paralyze ourselves due to overthinking.

Dena stated that remembering one word will help. "Notice" - you cannot change what you do not notice.

Notice the thoughts you are having. Try to treat everything as an iteration and take just one step toward your goal. One step creates the next step. When you are able to iterate, the pressure we put on ourselves drops. You begin to trust yourself more because you now know you can adapt.
