Erie’s Black Wall Street’s Executive Director, Kyra Taylor, has been selected as one of the incredible women recognized for her impact in strengthening community and civic life.

There are people in your community doing the quiet work that keeps everything together.
They don’t always have titles.
They don’t always get recognition.
But every day, they bring people closer, preserve stories, and create spaces where others feel seen.

Now it’s time to put their names on record.

PA Humanities is opening nominations for The Window Keeper: Civic Honors — a statewide recognition of individuals whose everyday actions strengthen community and sustain civic life.

This is about the neighbor who builds connection.
The educator who sparks curiosity.
The organizer who keeps culture alive.
The leader who makes people feel like they belong.

Inspired by poet Yolanda Wisher, this initiative frames civic life as a window. One that must be cared for, cleared, and kept open so light can move through it.

Window Keepers are the ones doing that work. Every single day.

Selected honorees will be recognized across Pennsylvania, featured through storytelling, and added to a living, interactive map that captures what community truly looks like in action.

This moment matters. The nation is approaching its 250th anniversary. The stories we choose to highlight now will shape how this chapter is remembered.

Nominate someone whose impact deserves to be seen.

Because community doesn’t sustain itself.
People sustain it.

Submit your nomination today: https://bit.ly/4w6SGG9

New Homeowner Alert!

We are thrilled to celebrate Homeowner #20 through Erie's Black Wall Street's Pathway to Homeownership Program!

Congratulations to Shakayla Strickland on becoming a homeowner! Through hard work, determination, and the support of community partnerships, Shakayla was able to access $10,000 in downpayment assistance from Erie's Black Wall Street and $15,000 through Marquette Savings Bank, bringing a total of $25,000 toward closing costs and home purchase expenses.

This milestone represents so much more than purchasing a house. Homeownership creates stability, builds equity, and lays the foundation for generational wealth. Every family we help become homeowners is another step toward closing the racial wealth gap and strengthening our community.

A special thank you to Dana Dickerson for her dedication and expertise in guiding Shakayla through the homebuying process. Having committed real estate professionals who believe in expanding access to homeownership is critical to making these success stories possible. Thank you, Dana, for helping make this dream a reality!

We also extend our gratitude to Marquette Savings Bank and all of our partners who continue to invest in creating pathways to homeownership for families in our community.

Shakayla, thank you for trusting us to be part of your journey. We are incredibly proud of you and wish you and your family many years of joy, love, and beautiful memories in your new home.

Please join us in congratulating Shakayla and her family on this exciting new chapter!

20 homeowners. Countless futures changed. And we're just getting started.
