Throwback to IPTW 2008 in Barre, Vermont — “A Place for the Trades.”
Set in one of America’s great stone working communities, IPTW 2008 brought preservation tradespeople together around the craft, skill, and shared knowledge that have always been at the heart of PTN.
IPTW 2008 opened with the keynote address “Wood, Stone and Iron” given by noted timber framer Jan Lewandoski. For the next three days, participants attended sessions by an eclectic mix of veteran and first time IPTW presenters on window repair, wood and slate carving, painting and plaster, timber framing, stone and masonry techniques, tools, machines and much more. Informative lectures were given on many subjects, including trades education programs in Falmouth Jamaica, Scandinavia, France, Colorado and Kentucky, and a panel discussion on the Vermont granite industry.
That spirit is what makes IPTW special: hands-on learning, old friends, new connections, and a deep respect for the trades that keep historic places standing.
As we look ahead to IPTW 2026 in Medina, New York, we’re also looking back with gratitude at the places, people, and workshops that built this tradition.
