On February 18th, 1973, Dave Arneson and David Megarry visited Gary Gygax’s house at 330 Center St in Lake Geneva, WI to demonstrate Arneson’s Blackmoor Game. A year later on February 7th, Gary wrote to Dave that D&D would be finished at the printers by the following week and one of the 1st published copies would be in Dave’s hands the week after that. This is pretty close to February 18th, 1974, one year after they played that Blackmoor Game in 1973. So Happy Birthday Dungeons and Dragons!

Reminder to everyone on our friends and followers list that the Kickstarter to build the Gygax Memorial Gaming Table for Fans of D&D ends in a few hours. It has funded for the basic stone elements of the table but could really use your help to fully realize the monument and get the bronze pieces added. If you have ever played D&D, are a gamer, or know someone who is, this is your chance to say thanks. If you are able to pledge, anything will be so appreciated. Otherwise, please spread the word as you are able. There are millions of D&D players worldwide, if we can recruit them to join our quest, we can build a monument to the greatest game ever played!

Members of the Lake Geneva City Council unanimously approved this week to accept a proposed memorial to honor Dungeons & Dragons co-founder E. Gary Gygax.

Gygax developed the idea for Dungeons & Dragons and other role playing games in 1974 from his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. The memorial will be located in the city’s Library Park (also known as Elm Park) where Gygax would sit on a bench, look across Geneva Lake at Stone Manor and dream of becoming a fantasy novelist.

“Gamers will be able to gather around and play a game of Dungeons & Dragons at the table around Gary,” said the president of the Gygax Memorial Fund. “We’re leaving one end open so it’s accessible to wheelchairs and other accessible means.”

The memorial is set to depict a stone table with a bronze statue of Gygax seated at one end with stone benches on each site where people can play a game of Dungeons & Dragons. The base of the memorial will include about 1,148 brick pavers with the names of the people who have donated funding toward the project. The Gygax Memorial Fund has raised about $200,000 for the project so far and hopes to raise enough money to have the brick pavers, sidewalk, benches and tables installed in September. The bronze statue of Gygax is set to be installed within the next two to three years.

We gotta' say this is worth a shot!

This is all very good and professional but I do also like the chaotic idea of just having “Killed a dragon” on your resume. ~Just Hazel

We are always amazed at the generosity of gamers and their deep love for the game of D&D and the hobby it created. The outpouring of appreciation and love for Dungeons & Dragons and how it has meant to so many people over the years is truly incredible! Here are just a few of the beautiful sentiments express by donors to the Kickstarter for the Gygax Memorial Table:

"I am so happy to have the chance to donate, even if it's small. D&D helped me through a rough time growing up. Now in college, I am spreading the love for it in our campus club. I hope to see this completed."

"I'm happy to have the chance to contribute to this memorial. I grew up playing AD&D and now my children are growing up playing."

"I'm happy to contribute to this. This hobby and the adventures we've gone on have done so much for me, my friends, my relatives, and I."

"I'm here to give back to the gaming community which has done much for me over the years."

"D&D has always been there for me. Today, I'm returning the favor."

We hear this over and over and it is a wonderful legacy. People say this game changed my life or this game saved my life or this game made me the person, the artist, the writer, I am today.

Many people think this game was created by a bunch of gamers in a basement. In fact it was born at Gary's own family dining room table, surrounded by friends, family, and loved ones.

Gary is surely smiling down on the legacy of D&D bringing families together, over generations, and the lifelong friendships it created for millions of gamers around the world.

We think this memorial is for all the fans. We can't wait to see the first groups gathering with their friends and playing and laughing at the table alongside Gary. Thank you for supporting this wonderful monument to D&D for gamers all over the world.

Reach out to all the other adventurers in your life and ask them to join us on our quest to say thanks to the greatest game ever played!
