We’re Hiring for the 2026–2027 Emergency Shelter Season! 🏠

As we prepare to open ECHOS’ Emergency Shelter on December 7, 2026, we’re looking for compassionate, dependable team members who want to make a meaningful difference in our community.

Our seasonal shelter team plays an important role in creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for our guests while working alongside the incredible volunteers who help make our shelter possible.

Part-Time Seasonal Opportunities:
• Shelter Operations Assistant
• Evening Shelter Assistant
• Overnight Shelter Assistant
• On-Call Shelter Assistant

Positions begin with the opening of the Emergency Shelter on December 7, with required in-person and online training taking place in November.

The ECHOS Team spent some time out of the office and at the Elizabethtown Fair this week! 🎡🐄

We started by volunteering with our friends at EBIC Elizabethtown BIC Church and their fair parking initiative, which helps raise funds to support local nonprofits. We’re grateful for community partners like EBIC who continue to find ways to invest back into our community.

Of course, we couldn’t be at the Fair without taking some time as a team to enjoy it, too! We checked out local vendors, met a few of the animals, and enjoyed spending time together outside of the office. 🐐🐖

A great week of giving back, supporting local, and spending time together as a team. 💙

🚐 DID YOU KNOW?! Pennsylvania offers transportation assistance that can help older adults get where they need to go.

Transportation can be an important part of staying independent and connected and there may be free or reduced-cost options available for adults age 65 and older.

🚌 Free Transit Program: Adults 65+ can ride participating local fixed-route public transportation for free with a Senior Citizen Transit ID Card.

🚐 Shared Ride Program: Adults 65+ may use scheduled shared-ride transportation and pay only a portion of the regular fare.

🩺 Medical Assistance Transportation Program: Pennsylvania residents who receive Medical Assistance and have an unmet transportation need may qualify for free transportation to Medicaid-covered health care services, including appointments and trips to the pharmacy.

Pennsylvania’s Find My Ride is another great place to start. It can help older adults, individuals with disabilities, and Medical Assistance recipients explore free or low-cost transportation programs available in their area.

💚 Free Mental Health First Aid Training at ECHOS!

Would you know how to respond if a friend, family member, coworker, neighbor, or someone in your community was experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge?

ECHOS will host an Adult Mental Health First Aid Training designed to give community members practical knowledge and skills to help another adult who may be struggling or experiencing a crisis.

During this FREE training, participants will learn how to recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges, interact with someone in crisis and connect them with help, and explore topics including trauma, substance use, and self-care.

🍎 Free Nutrition Classes at ECHOS This September! 🥕

We’re excited to host the Nutrition Links from Penn State Extension Program for a five-week series of FREE nutrition classes at ECHOS!

Nutrition Links combines practical, research-based nutrition education with hands-on activities and cooking demonstrations. Participants will learn useful skills they can take home and put into practice right away, including:

🥗 Planning and preparing tasty, healthy meals
💵 Stretching food dollars
🛒 Using SNAP benefits and other resources wisely
🧼 Practicing food safety
🏃 Finding ways to move more every day

Classes will be held in the ECHOS shelter dining room from 12–2 PM on:

📅 Wednesday, September 2
📅 Wednesday, September 9
📅 Wednesday, September 16
📅 Wednesday, September 23
📅 Wednesday, September 30

Participants who complete the course will receive incentives, including a small bundle of household essentials from ECHOS and kitchen essentials provided by Nutrition Links.

Eligibility: Participants must be a parent of someone age 19 or younger, a pregnant teen, or between the ages of 18–25. Participants must also receive benefits such as SNAP or Medicaid or utilize food assistance programs such as a food bank or free school lunch.

There is no cost to participate.

Check your eligibility for Medicaid and keep a lookout for updates to your coverage and requirements in September 2026. If you are required to meet new requirements and do not follow the rules, you will lose Medicaid coverage.
